If you have been looking for ways to bring back that glisten to your not-so-pearly whites, teeth whitening could be the answer.

Because we aren't happy with the appearance of our teeth, we may not have the beautiful smile we'd really like. Numerous individuals are just not blessed with natural pearly white teeth, and other people have tarnished their teeth with drinks including coffee, red wine, and tea.

You may be considering teeth whitening if your pearly whites aren't exactly the shade you would like. Another cause of teeth discoloration is aging. A tooth whitening can make you look years younger!

If you decide to whiten your teeth, start by visiting with your dentist. An impression mold will be made of your upper and lower teeth. These two impressions will then be sent to a dental laboratory.

The dentist's mold of your teeth will be used to create a reproduction of your tooth structure by the lab. Using these models, teeth trays can be made from a plastic material. The tray will be sent back to your dentist.

At your dentist's office you'll be shown how to apply whitening product to the trays and how to fit them in your mouth. It is very simple. You will use the syringes of whitening gel from your kit to squeeze onto your trays concentrating on those teeth you would like to be whiter. Then you put the trays in your mouth before bed and wear them overnight.

You continue this process until the level of whitening you desire is reached. Usually, the majority of patients get instant results, and this procedure can be finished up within two to three weeks. Discolorationg from fleurosis or tetracycline use will take a longer term of treatment, about 2 to 6 months. These cases are unusual.

It's recommended to wait at least two weeks after whitening, if you need to get any restorative work done, so the color has time to stabilize. Normally, the process does not have to be repeated. There has been a lot of study done on how effective whitening is. Many patients are still happy with their tooth color years after their treatment.

Some people will have some degree of sensitivity in the beginning of, or at some point into, the treatment. It is usually not very uncomfortable and subsides when treatment is over. Sensodyne toothpaste really helps to sooth this problem.

In addition to the professional whitening treatments you can get from your dentist, there are a number of safe over-the-counter teeth whitening products available. But their true effectiveness remains a question. In most cases, these over the counter products will not yield a great change in tooth shade, although you could see a little reduction of the stains and perhaps a very small amount of teeth whitening.

If you are going to try an at-home product, try one with mouth trays you can mold to your particular mouth, or plastic strips. Both types will give you a fairly good fit, but they are also very expensive.

After you finish whitening your teeth, you must stay away from those things that can negatively impact your tooth color. These are drinks such as coffee, red wine and, tea, and, of course, cigarettes. It's very important you talk with your dentist if you experience extreme pain or sensitivity, or have extravagant irritation while using the kit.
