Beer is one of the world's oldest beverages. It has been around for thousands of years. In fact, some experts think that domesticated agriculture started because neolithic people needed a steady source of grain in order to brew more beer.
In other words, everything around us in society owes its existence to beer brewing. That's a pretty powerful thought, especially when you consider the fact that you can easily brew your own beer at home.
When you brew your own beer at home, you're following in the footsteps of hundreds of generations of people. At one time, all beer was brewed at home. Water quality was awful back in the day. People understood that a fermented drink was safer than water.
They began producing these alternatives to water with whatever everyday materials were at hand. In warmer climates, this meant using grapes to make wine. In cooler climates, it meant using grain to make beer. Either way, it was done in the home and it was done nearly every day.
It turned out that some people were better at brewing beer than others. The beer these people made tasted better. Other people noticed the difference in taste and began asking these people for beer. Soon, the better brewers were in business selling their better tasting beer and the first breweries were born.
These first breweries were really just small brewpubs. They made enough beer for the neighborhood and sold it right out of their homes. Some brewers provided a "taproom" where people could sit and enjoy their beer. These were the first bars, taverns and pubs.
The point is, even though some people were considered to be "brewers", most beer was still being produced in small batches in the kitchens of homes, just as you may brew your own beer in your own home. If you went back to those times, you would be able to walk from neighborhood to neighborhood, parish to parish, and taste a different brew in each one. Brewing was local, organic and simple.
This is why, when you brew your own beer, you're a part of a very old tradition. In many ways, humanity developed because of this tradition.
