Body Piercing Anyone? A Few Things to Consider

Body piercing has gained widespread popularity as of late. Everywhere you go you can see people sporting a ring in their lip, nose, eyebrow, tongue, or some other body part. While there are numerous reasons why people decide to get piercings, there is without question, some unexpected side effects that should be considered.

For instance, think about relationships. How will a body piercing affect your future significant other? Not all people are totally on board with the whole idea of body piercing. Perhaps there will be little effect at all, but please understand that this decision "may" limit your choice of partners for at least the short term.

Also, think about the effects on the body. It is true that body piercing can dull the senses of the pierced body part. Now this may not seem that important today, but understand that the decision to pierce a body part is long term - a decision that lasts for a lifetime. Losing sensitivity in your lip or eyebrow might not be that big of a deal, but losing sensitivity in private areas is something you will probably regret later in life.

There is also the issue of permanent scarring. Obviously the larger the piercing, the greater chance for permanent scarring and disfigurement. This problem is especially acute when the piercing is done by an inexperienced practitioner who bumbles the job, or if the piercing tools are dull or contaminated.

Finally, there's the issue of loose stools. You heard me right - loose stools. Now we're not talking about the bar stools you may sit at in the local pub. We're talking about...yes that's right....anal leakage. Having a couple of piercings is probably not that big of a problem. But if you go all out and get multiple piercings, the risk of anal leakage goes way up with each piercing. "Now what is that about?" you may ask. Let me explain. The reason for this leakage is due to the metal from the piercings that leach into your body and increase the level of certain heavy metals. It's essentially blood poisoning, and this is a serious health problem that cannot be ignored. Nickel is especially prone to this effect as well as other heavy metals such as sterling silver and even gold.

Although the problems just mentioned are something to consider, if your desire to have piercings for the right reasons continues, then by all means, take a deep breath and go for it.

Decide just how visible you want your body piercing to be. Do you want it to be seen when you're wearing short sleeves, shorts, or a skirt? You may wish to avoid getting your hands, neck, or face pierced, due to the fact that many employers still frown on body piercing. Whether you feel this is fair or not, the fact remains that piercings which are always visible can make it much harder to get hired for certain jobs.

Finally, make sure you get your body pierced by an experienced professional at a reputable body piercing shop. Needles should be sterile, as should the general working conditions. If the facility is dirty or filled with clutter, walk out. Find another place to take your business. After all it's your body and you want it done right. Any mistake is something you will have to live with. Be picky about your artist. View his or her portfolio and see samples of previous work before getting pierced. Dont' make a mistake at this stage - you need to be 100% happy with your body piercing.
