The need for BMW M1 series sports car

Its been a difficult time for fans of BMWs 1 series coupe, the compact and agile lightwhite from Bavaria. Why? News, rumors and spyshots filter through the net on a daily basis, enough to overwhelm even the most dedicated BMW fanatics.

BMW has already laid down a path with the 335iS and the Z4 sDrive35iS" Nope, thats wrong. "But, this would come way too late in the life round of the current 1 coupe and also would kill sales of the M3?" Wrong again, but lets not get ahead of ourselves for the moment.

BMW has a tradition of offering marvelous small machines at a rather affordable price, traits that have been seemingly neglected with their current lineup of M cars. Nobody can deny the appeal of the current M3 and M5 models, but they are bigger, heavier and more expensive than their predecessors. Which of course were in turn bigger, heavier and more expensive than the versions they replaced. You get the point. It is for this very reason the man in charge at BMW M, Dr. Kay Segler, announced during an interview with the German car magazine Auto Motor und Sport that BMW was seriously considering building an "M variant of the current 1 series".

This was great news back in 11/2009. But, it was too early to get excited about this comment, weve all become cautious with announcements of new cars, to be accurate we have become cautious mainly becuase of announcements of cars that have subsequently never seen the light of production. As time passed by, it has since become safe to take for granted that this car will not share the fate of being axed with other models like the CS. There were reports (or rather blog entries) citing unnamed sources at BMW, that the M variant of the 1 series coupe had been green-lighted for production.

The BMW Group has been conducting intensive investigations into the issue of electromobility for many years and plays a leading role in this area. Since mid-2009 the company has been gathering valuable information on the everyday usage of electrically-powered automobiles as part of a worldwide pilot project involving 600 MINI E cars. For example, in Germany the company has teamed up with its partner Vattenfall to release 50 of the cars to customers in Berlin as part of a project supported by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.

Initial results from the german capital study after more than six months of usage show that the electric car's limited range is proving in the vast majority of cases to be sufficient for the participants under everyday conditions. Added to which, the charge time required for the MINI E does not have a restrictive effect on users. In the target group for the car, i.e. city dwellers with small cars, the MINI E is used in a comparable way to a conventional electric vehicle.

The BMW Group sees e-mobility as one part in a future system of mobility which comprises several different fuels and drive systems (electric and combustion engines, hybrids), each competing to provide the real best solution for the varying requirements of customers.
