Many novice, or casual computer users are sometimes unaware of the effects that browsing the internet can have on their computer. They are unaware that, in most cases, when they visit a site, there are cookies placed on their computer, in order for advertisers, or websites to accommodate their needs when browsing. This isn't so bad in the sense that most of the time, cookies do make the browsing experience a little better. However, there does come the occasional time when a browsers cookies need to be cleared, to clear up memory space, and to continue having a smooth browsing experience. This is all well and good, but the problem is, cookies aren't the only thing a person can get from browsing the internet.
There are some sites out there, a lot of sites out there, which will place spyware, or malware on a person's computer. These are programs that are meant to transfer data back and forth from a person's computer, to the program's maker. If you've ever had a real problem with pop-ups, then you have become a victim of spyware. If you've ever noticed a sudden decline in your computer's performance, both on and off the internet, then you have probably fallen victim to spyware.
Being unaware that this happens can also make a person vulnerable to a lot of viruses that are out on the internet. A person may go to a site that they've never heard about, and download a game that looks interesting to them, or, the ever famous, "catch the monkey, or shoot the duck" pop-up that tells users they can win a prize by doing so. These are examples of ways a person can get infected with spyware and viruses.
To avoid this, a person needs two types of programs, which programs you get do matter, but to varying degrees. What I mean by that is, take for instance me. I use a program called Avast for my virus protection. Avast is free, and it does the job just fine for me, because I don't dive too deep into the internet to where I would be at risks of getting any real viruses. However, a person who likes to go to many illegal sites, or porn sites may find that they need a program, or a version, much heavier than the free version of Avast, because they are increasing their chances (by a good amount) of getting a virus, or serious spyware. For the spyware search and destroy software, there are a lot of options out there, and what I would suggest really, with both programs is that you get one that is constantly updating its database. This way, you're not blind-sided by something new that comes along, because your antivirus of spy search and destroy company doesn't keep their database up to date.
So remember, to combat the constant threats of spyware, and viruses that plague the internet, you need two pieces of software. You need antivirus software, and you need to download the best removal software spyware you can find. There are free versions of each of these, but remember, that depends on your usage one, and how important the data on your computer is two. If you're storing banking information, and things of that nature, then I would really suggest looking at the premium versions of whatever software you're considering.
