We all know the healthy benefits of exercising and how it contributes to a healthier lifestyle. So if we all know this, why is obesity still such a huge problem in the U.S.? Actually it is a really big problem with our country leading the charge in obesity. Over half of the female population over the age of 19 is obese with about 3/4 of the male population clinically obese. It's a problem for kids too; children under 2 are obese at a percentage of 9.5 while the 2 to 19 year olds aren't faring any better at an alarming 16.9 percent. This is not good for any of these individuals due to increased health and heart problems.
The Internet has brought us the ability to perform online banking and to virtually shop till we drop online. Technology has evolved so much that we barely need to even venture outside of our homes. The Internet also has the ability to inform us of all the great benefits of exercising, although many of us would rather hang out with our friends on Facebook, than meet up for a pick-up game of basketball at the park.
As television has soared to new heights in ratings, leaving us with the unparalleled fear of not making it home in time to catch our favorite shows. Consoles such as the beloved PlayStation 3 deliver tag lines on commercials like,"PS3; it only does everything." Everything? Really? I even bought one for myself off Amazon with the hopes that it would make me breakfast in the morning.
The point is, in the midst of the mayhem we call our everyday lives and with the impressive advancements we have made with technologically, we have abandoned the desire to be and feel healthy. We drain our pocket books and mental health by giving in to the countless double cheeseburgers and mindless entertainment that we encounter in our everyday lives. We justify our poor choices and quantify ourselves in terms of food, otherwise only amplifying the negative effects of our unhealthy ways.
The good news is that you do not have to let technology keep you sitting on your butt all day long. If you are one of the aforementioned victims, afflicted by the plaguing urge to negate good judgment then please, abandon your bon bons, leave the safety of your couch, and join us in fighting the legions of excess baggage.
If you think that some buffed-up over-tan vein-flaunting wannabe-be trainer coming straight off his road rage is not exactly a source of inspiration, then here's the idea. You have to gain your own inspiration and maybe start small. If you work in an office and cannot get out until lunch, grab a couple of coworkers and take a walk around the building.
If you are a person that hates going to the gym, using your own body weight in your own setting may be up your alley. Start a neighborhood group to walk or grab your kids and head to the track.
Do what you feel is right and empower yourself. You will feel better all-around and when you feel stronger and in control of your life, everything else will start to look up too. If all else fails, do it to avoid being the person that has to say, "I got these hips from my mother."
