The Belmont Stakes betting competition is one of the most renowned and important competitions in the horse racing wagering action and the 2010 edition of this classic is just around the corner. The Belmont Stakes is the 3rd leg of the famed Triple Crown of the horse racing betting competition, but because Triple Crown winners are so unusual it's often the most unimportant of the three marquee races and it's not as popular as its counterparts.

The Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing is comprised of the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. Situated at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, the Kentucky Derby is one and a quarter miles in length. At the Pimlico Contest Course in Baltimore, Maryland, we find the Preakness Stakes, which is run at one and 3/16ths of a mile. Put on every year in Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, the Belmont Stakes is the last leg of the Triple Crown. Winning all three of the races in the Triple Crown, which is for three-year-old thoroughbred horses, is regarded as the greatest achievement a thoroughbred can ever obtain. A horse named Affirmed picked up the Triple Crown in 1978. No horse in the United States has claimed it since.

Despite its status as the "the other" Triple Crown betting competition the Belmont Stake betting event has been host of the most crucial and most exciting horse races in the history of the sport. Every single Triple Crown victor has claimed their title here at the Belmont odds competition and despite the fact that the event is observed closely every year, it's still the most significant horse betting event of the year if there is the possibility of a Triple Crown victor.

A number of things that casual sports betting fans may not know about the Belmont Stakes betting event is that it's the longest of all three Triple Crown betting race at 1 ½ miles and for that reason is considered the most difficult of the three major races. If any horse is going to win the Triple Crown they have to earn it at the Belmont odds event.

The competition is named after August Belmont, the first president of the Jockey Club in 1867. As you may have suspected the Belmont Stakes betting has a extended history and this year's June 5th event will be the 144th running of the event, the first presented in 1867. The Belmont wagering event is the oldest of the Triple Crown betting predating the Preakness by 6 years and the Kentucky Derby by 8 years.

Throughout the years there have been some extraordinary horse racing moments celebrated at the Belmont Stakes betting event. Perhaps the most unforgettable was in 1973 when Triple Crown victor Secretariat ran to a substantial 31-length victory over the remainder of the field, not simply acquiring the Triple Crown betting championship, but also establishing the world record at the 1 ½ mile distance at 2:24.

Even though we will not see a Triple Crown victor this year we still may see a fresh record in the 1 ½ mile distance and there are numerous intriguing bets to make against the horse racing odds in the 2010 edition.
