Beds Vary In Size All Over The Globe

Most countries have a customary set of four sizes of mattresses. In countries that have English as their main language, the usual standard size double bed measures about 54 inches by 63 inches. The metric measurements used in Europe are different.

King sized mattresses, while common, are not usually inclusive of a set of whole box springs; instead, you will usually find two different box springs used to cover the area under the mattress. The "Eastern King," the most common King size mattress in the U.S., commonly uses two extra long twins as box springs.

Standard Bed Sizes

Current manufacturing regulations have resulted in a limited number of standard sizes of commercial bedding for mattresses and box springs. They contrast by country of origin.

Other than the double bed, the sizes in the U. S. tend to be a bit larger than those in the U.K.. The U.S. Queen corresponds to UK King and King to Super King. The U.K. bed sizes and the European sizes are very similar but the standard length of European beds is two meters.

These measurements are for the mattress sizes. The real bed construction is a bit larger because it can then fully encompass and support the mattress. Considerable difference may be seen in the mattress thickness.

About half the width of the U.S. single bed, in several parts of the globe, including China, is the width of many standard beds. This is one pillow's width. This small sized bed is very uncommon in countries and populations that are more affluent and have larger people. There, the standard for one person sleeping is the "twin" size. The term "single" has become the term used for beds for one person and "double" for two person beds, as there does not seem to be any other standard terms to describe them.

It could be that this terminology change is promoted, used and encouraged by those who are involved in the retail sale of beds in order to denote that a "double bed" is a mere 15 inches wider than and "single bed," thus attempting to encourage possible purchase of a bed that carried a higher price and is called a "queen sized" bed. The original "single" bed, it may be noted, is the same size as a portable cot.
