Weymouth and Portland is enjoying a facelift and there’s a lot to smile about! The Olympic and Paralympic sailing events in 2012 will be hosted at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy, and the adjoining Portland Marina, which offers some of the best small boat sailing conditions in the world. The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has constructed a new permanent 250m slipway and new race-boat parking, lifting and mooring facilities. The completion of the project late 2008 on time and to budget delivers an early legacy of world-class facilities for elite athletes and the local Dorset community to use.

The ODA’s completion of the new sailing facilities is only the first phase in the wider regeneration of Weymouth & Portland ahead of the 2012 Games. Following the departure of the MOD from Portland, SWERDA acquired a site to secure its future regeneration, now known as Osprey Quay. Currently under construction is a new 560-berth commercial marina of which 250 berths will be used during the 2012 Games. The development brings an array of shore-side facilities including new marine retail and commercial units, bringing enormous social and economic regeneration to the local area. The Games could bring an estimated £1.7 billion of economic benefit to the South West.

Weymouth too is changing its image! In September 2008 the Council secured a grant of £6.6 M from the SWERDA to revitalize the Esplanade. This significant investment will help to create a new pedestianised square, centred around the King’s Statue. The square will be paved with high quality Portland stone and the space will be flexible functioning as both an informal meeting place and a venue for organized events and exhibitions. External seating, new planters, public art, lighting and fountains are some of the proposed features to create an up-market social meeting place for visitors and locals to enjoy.

Newcomers to the town on the back of the Olympic win include the new four star B+B Weymouth positioned prominently overlooking the King’s Statue. This B+B has become one of the first bed and breakfasts in Weymouth and Portland to become an official accommodation provider to the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games’ Sailing Event. The B+B has contracted some of its rooms to LOCOG (London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games) for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, July to September 2012.

A finalist at the 14th Annual Dorset Business Awards, the modern and contemporary B+B Weymouth is just one example of private investors identifying Weymouth as an up and coming town with opportunities for SMEs in hospitality. It is reassuring to see private as well as public money being pumped into this tired and run down seaside resort. The potential here is beginning to be unveiled and will undoubtedly bring Weymouth back to its halcyon days, as it so rightly deserves!
