As Cleveland will have a new head coach next year, basketball gambling on Cleveland is probably to be different.

Mike Brown was let go on Sunday. He was the most productive coach in franchise history. The Cavaliers were disappointing in the playoffs in NBA wagering. Brown lost his job because of their lack of playoff success.

Cleveland was fantastic during the normal year under Brown but they simply couldn't get over the hump and win an NBA title. It may not be all Brown's doing that Cleveland had issues in the playoffs. LeBron James has had his moments in the playoffs but he has yet to prove he can lead a team when it counts. In the playoffs they were exposed, and the rest of the Cleveland roster looks poor.

Brown was an fantastic defensive coach and Cleveland were great on that end of the floor. In the 2006-07 seasons, the Cleveland Cavaliers allowed only 92 points a game and that quantity was even lower in the playoffs as the Cleveland Cavaliers reached the NBA Finals for the first time in their history. Last year the Cleveland Cavaliers allowed opponents only 91 points per game and won a team-record 66 games. The Cavaliers didn't play very good defense last year in the Eastern Conference Finals and vs Boston in this year's playoffs they also struggled at times.

Brown was plainly an fantastic head coach and it shouldn't be long before he has another job. He was 272-138 during the normal year with Cleveland. His Cleveland teams in the playoffs were 42-29. He was awarded 2009 NBA Coach of the Year.

Prior to Mike Brown's 5-year stint as the Cavaliers' head coach, the Cleveland Cavaliers went through four coaches in a 5 year period. In fact, only three coaches out of eighteen in franchise history have served longer than Mike Brown. Two were head coach for six years each, and the first Cavaliers coach, Bill Fitch, worked for 9 years. Brown was at least able to see the Cleveland Cavaliers to the conference semifinals 5 years consecutively, an accomplishment unmatched by any other coach in the franchise. He also took them to the NBA Finals for the first time in Cavaliers history. Though they were swept by the Spurs in that series, it was still an enormous improvement over the 37 years prior. It leads one to wonder what kind of phenomenon the ownership of the Cleveland Cavaliers is hoping for out of coach number 19.

What does the long run hold for Cleveland lacking Brown at the helm? It depends upon what LeBron James decides to do. He could decide that he can now run things in Cleveland with Brown out of the way, or he could decide that he has a improved chance to win in Chicago, New York or some other town. James has said that he didn't push for Brown to be let go but there were definite clues that LeBron didn't like the way things were going. Whether or not the Cleveland Cavaliers have a favorable outcome next year is up for debate but there's no question that Cleveland was an fantastic team under Mike Brown and his success will be challenging for the next coach to emulate.
