While most funeral homes are willing to provide everything you need from the memorial service planning and flower arrangements to the urn and cremation services. However, not everyone wants to go the full nine yards. You may want just the cremation, which is something you can arrange easily.

There are many reasons for choosing only cremation. Some people opt to hold a private ceremony with close friends and family members, perhaps in a place where the deceased enjoyed being. If you are going to scatter the ashes, this is a good way to do it, with a small celebration of the deceased's life and releasing them in a special place.

What should you expect from a basic cremation service? Well, if you opt not to have the memorial included, then you can expect fairly basic service.

Transportation

The funeral home will transport the deceased for you, from the place of death, whether that is in the home or hospital. If the deceased is in the morgue, the home will pick them up there and take them to the crematory. In the case of a separate memorial, you can have the casket picked up from the church or space where you arranged to hold the memorial service.

Cremation

The process of cremation is governed by many laws. For example, a regular casket cannot be burned, due to excessive metal and pollutants. There are special containers that can be used, however, and these should be provided by the crematory. If you wish your loved one to be cremated in a particular casket, look for one that is approved for cremation services. The funeral home can help you with this.

The actual cremation, of course, is also provided and the handling of the remains afterwards will also be included in the main price.

The Ashes

After the cremation, you will be given the ashes to keep. If you have opted for just a simple cremation service, then you will be presented with a temporary container containing the ashes so you can either scatter them yourself or place them in another that you have selected, such as an urn or memory locket. There are many options available for keeping your loved one close to you, from elegant glass and metal urns to beautifully carved wooden boxes with sculptures and teddy bears with tiny keepsake urns or lockets.

Make sure you speak with the cremation service to find out exactly what they do offer. Most will have at least one or two package options for you to look at, which may include an urn and other options. Some services will even contact Social Services to notify them of the death, if you like and may even put a notice in the newspaper for you.

An agency that offers cremation services will usually be able to get you better prices than if you are dealing directly with the funeral home or crematory. They can also aid you in selecting the best crematory in your area, something that can be very difficult to do when you are grieving your loss. Having an advocate can be a great aid during this time.

Whether you have decided to hold the memorial service elsewhere or choose to keep things private, direct cremation can be a good way to go. You eliminate the need to set up a funeral and can just get the basic cremation services to keep things simple and economical.
