With the ever increasing need to make sound ecological choices, we may look to bamboo fabrics to add an environmentally-friendly touch of luxury to our homes. Bamboo sheets and towels offer a better choice for the conscientious consumer.

Bamboo Basics
Humans have been making use of bamboo for centuries. Some of its many uses are building materials, weaving, paper, medicine, food, charcoal & textiles.

Bamboo is a woody grass that grows extremely fast – some species up to four feet a day. Much like your lawn, after cutting, it will grow back with no need to replant. A stand of bamboo will resemble a forest of trees, though bamboo will reach maturity in just one growing season. There are more than 1500 species of bamboo worldwide. The species most commonly used for textiles is Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys Pubescens), which grows primarily in large areas of eastern China. Unlike cotton crops, bamboo thrives without pesticides or fertilizers due to its unique antimicrobial property (called Bamboo Kun). It does not require irrigation, and can survive periods of drought as well as flooding. Bamboo produces 30% more oxygen, and takes in more carbon dioxide than an equivalent stand of trees. It is also an excellent inhibitor of soil erosion. Bamboo has been called “natures most sustainable resource”

Bed, Bath & Bamboo
Bamboo fabric retains the anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties of the bamboo plant, making it an excellent choice for sheets, bedding, and towels. Bamboo sheets actually repel & kill bacteria, fungus, and dust mites! Think of the advantage this has for those with allergies, as well as the rest of us. If you’ve ever seen those magnified photographs of dust mites that are prevalent in all of our homes, you will appreciate this quality. Bamboo fabrics are a healthier choice for all of us, but particularly those with allergies or chemical sensitivities.

Bamboo sheets are thermal regulating; helping to keep you cooler in the summer & warmer in cold weather. Bamboo is moisture-wicking (draws moisture away from the body - letting it evaporate), and resistant to mold and mildew which helps to prevent odors. Bamboo towels are more absorbent and dry much faster than their cotton counterparts. As an added benefit, bamboo sheets and towels are luxuriously soft; far softer than even the highest thread count cotton. These same qualities make bamboo a great fabric for clothing.
But What Will the Pandas Eat?

As bamboo products gain in popularity, some have expressed concern for the Pandas food source. Bamboo makes up 99% of the Pandas diet and they eat over 30 different species of bamboo. Pandas feed where the lower leaves of bamboo are easily accessible. Moso bamboo has no leaf growth on the first 5 meters of the stem and is therefore not a source of food for the panda.

You can luxuriate guilt-free in bamboo sheets knowing they are good for our environment, and even the Giant Pandas don’t mind!
When you think of bamboo fabrics; think organic, soft, fresh, dry, and eco-friendly.
