Why do backlinks help you rank higher? When you link yourself with relevant websites, Google sees that you're reputable in a specific area or business and decides it is worthwhile to boost up your rankings in that industry, meaning, Google benefits from greater business and transactions, you benefit from customers entering your website and buying products and services (granted if you have good conversions and leads on your website, and the customer benefits from finally being able to purchase what they were looking for.

So if backlinks are so valuable, how can you acquire backlinks?

It is pretty easy to acquire backlinks for your website if you're willing to put in the work or hire a company who's capable of generating backlinks for you; otherwise, you want to consider backlink methods such as blog posting (which includes searching current and relevant blogs, and then post a comment inside the blog (make sure the name bar doesn't include your actual name, but rather the keyword that you want to rank for). Next, you can consider signing up for forums and placing your website inside your signature tag (bewarned many forums do not accept websites in your signature however, as it is a sign of advertising). Another form of backlinking is writing articles and including your anchor text in the resource box (an anchor text is an HTML based code devised of placing your website together with your desired keyword). Articles are a great way to receive quick and relevant backlinks from article directories, you only lose some value if you keep submitting articles to the same directories, you receive quantity links over quality because it is not a unique IP anymore which is sending you a backlink.
