Baby Yeast Infection Signs

It is criminal isn’t it? If your baby is a bit grizzly and has a pimply rash on its bottom that just won’t go away or it has white spots in its mouth. These are classic baby yeast infection symptoms.

What causes a baby yeast infection?

There are four ways;

1) During labor; As baby is passing through the birth canal there is a good chance that they will come into contact with any yeast infection that the mother may have in that area.

2) During breastfeeding;
During the breastfeeding process it is very easy for Mom to pass a yeast infection onto baby and for a baby with a yeast infection to pass it back to Mom.

3) Hygiene;
Aren't modern nappies great? They hold so much liquid and yet baby stays so dry! Or does she? While the new diapers draw moisture away from her skin, she will still be a bit wet. Combine this with the warmth of the diaper and you have an ideal situation for Candida to grow.
When changing diapers try and wipe from front to back - especially for girls. When bathing take care to clean the lower area thoroughly.

4) Antibiotics;
There are loads of children who have to take antibiotics, some from the time that they are born. Unfortunately these are a 'neccesary evil' and will only be prescribed if absolutely essential. They do come with their own set of minor side effects, one of which is that baby may become more susceptible to a baby yeast infection. If your baby does need to go on antibiotics then ask your health care provider about a specialist infant probiotic.

Mothers take heed too! Many of you will also be on antibiotics after giving birth which will make you very prone to a yeast infection.

Not every rash is a baby yeast infection, but if baby has a rash that does not respond quickly to treatment, spreads over the genitals and onto the lower tummy and has white spots like small blisters, then it is a good chance that Candida is the culprit.
If the rash does not clear or they get white spots in their mouth then you will need to take baby to see a medical professional.

What next?

Your doctor will be able to tell you immediately whether your baby has a baby yeast infection or not. He may take a small sample of the skin - it is just a wee scrape, baby won't even feel it! - and send it off to the lab for testing. If this comes back positive he will probably prescribe an anti-fungal medicine.

Natural Remedies
There are many home remedies for the relief of baby yeast infection symptoms, from the use of tea tree oil (very diluted - 1 drop to 2 litres of water), to colloidal silver, to cinnamon oil, yoghurt or cider vinegar.

Aloe gel or a cool damp chamomile tea bag pressed to the area may also relieve the symptoms.

Have regular 'bare bum time' for your baby, not only will she love it, but it will help her bottom stay dry and aired.
If you or bub end up with a Candida infection, please ensure that you do seek medical advice and that you treat it quickly and thoroughly. By doing this now, you will potentially save yourself a lot of hassle in the future.
