The law states that all kids up to 135cm tall (around 4'5"), or the age of 12, whichever comes first, have got to travel in the right child restraint for their weight with very not many exceptions. This ruling applies regardless of whether the newborn travels in the front or rear seats in cars, trucks and other commercial vehicles.

Tourists coming to the Scotland from overseas must also use the appropriate child car seat for their children - there are no exceptions for them. Relatives and friends expecting visitors should make sure that their visitors are aware of the system. They may need to help out to make arrangements so that kids utilize the correct newborn restraint at all times. Car rental companies can provide child restraints for their clients if arranged in advance.

Exceptions to the regulations

In restricted circumstances, toddlers can travel with no right child restraint.

1) In a licensed taxi or licensed private hire vehicle. If the right child restraint is not obtainable then, in the back seat only, kids under three years old may travel unrestrained. Children aged 3 years and over must use an adult seat belt.

2) In cases of unanticipated necessity over a short distance. If the right kid restraint is not obtainable then, in the rear seat only, a child of 3 years or more must use an adult belt. This exemption does not pertain to kids under three years and does not include standard school runs or other journeys that are arranged in advance.

3) Where two occupied toddler restraints in the back seat put a stop to you fitting another. In this set of circumstances, as long as the front seat vehicle is occupied, a third child aged 3 years and over can make use of an adult seat belt (either a lap or lap plus diagonal) in the rear. If the front seat is available, then they must be put there using the appropriate child car seat.

4) In older cars with no rear seat belts. In this case, children three years and over may travel without a car seat.

One example of a top quality car seat which meets all of these necessities is manufactured by a company named Maxi Cosi.
