Avoiding Common Betting Mistakes

Pitfalls abound in sports betting that can befall an unexperienced. If you want to be successful betting on games, it is best to ensure that you are not committing any of the following common betting mistakes.
Bankroll (Money Management)
Probably the most important part of the wanna-be-success-story’s mindset! You can have a great method or system to follow, but if you don’t employ good betting bank or money management principles, you will struggle to make a long term profit.

Right Staking
Your betting bank is not an endless resource, and betting by its nature brings risk. So you need to stake correctly to protect your bank when the inevitable losing runs occur.

Chasing Losses
Chasing your losses is the quickest way to the poorhouse. I have seen many systems that incorporate poor progressive or loss recovering staking systems, and 99% of them would have sent me straight into bankruptcy.
The only time I would EVER use any form of staking plan is if the system itself made a profit at Level Stakes. If, and ONLY if, a level stake profit is achieved then a staking
plan may improve profits when introduced but it must be thoroughly investigated first.

Greed/Get Rich Quick Mentality
Put simply, there are no get rich quick methods in the betting arena. It is only the greedy person that buys a system believing that what they have is a method that will provide them with immediate riches. There are no loopholes in betting. What you know gives you edge over the Bookmakers! What you need to become a success is a system that has produced profit long term.

Lack Of Discipline
This is an area that could easily damage, or completely wipe-out your betting bank, so beware. A successful punter displays a high level of discipline. It could be a simple discipline like always gathering the right data for your method or checking odds prices at the same time each day. On the other hand it could be a crucial discipline like setting your stakes correctly, or following the rules of a system to the letter.

Emotion
Once again, we must look at the crowd here to fully understand how emotion affects punters. When we are part of a crowd losing is easier to handle emotionally as we convince ourselves that it was not our fault, we were just doing what everyone else did. Losing is, however, a very personal and lonely affair. To be in control of our emotions is actually quite simple. We must simply adjust our mindset to understand that losing is part of the process. If you operate a system that has a 50% strike rate, then it goes without saying that you will win half the time, and lose half the time.

Laziness
Unfortunately, most punters are lazy by nature. It is not a criticism, it is just a fact. Natural human tendency is to try and get the most for the least effort. It’s not our fault; it has been indoctrinated into us from an early age.
Gary Player once said, The more I practice, the luckier I get.

Stupidity
As human beings we have a distinct advantage in that we are able to learn from our mistakes. Would you repeatedly put your hand in a fire if it burnt you each time? So if we are able to learn from our mistakes, why as punters do we not take notice every time we put another crisp note in the bookies satchel? Grass Is Greener On the Other Side One of the most apt sayings for the gambling community! Most punters will buy a new system, operate it for a week or two, and if it doesn’t bring them the proverbial truck-load of cash to their door they throw the toys straight
out of the pram! Changing approaches as often as the weather will not give a system a true test, and therefore will not provide you with enough time to prosper.
Take it from me the grass is NEVER greener on the other side!
