Bed bugs are back and many people are trying to get rid of bed bugs. . These insects are not new on the scene and have lived off humans for centuries. Now they are making a comeback in the United States as well as other nations.

Bed bugs are reddish- brown in color, very flat, and have no wings to speak of. They are about the size of an apple seed and are "true bugs" which have piercing mouth parts that in most species are used for feeding on plants. Bed bugs use their piercing mouths to feed exclusively on blood of warm blooded creatures, preferably humans. Bed bugs are blood sucking insects in the family cimicidae.

These insects are very flat and can live in cracks and crevices around the host's bed. If only a few bed bugs are present, they will be found living close to your sleeping area but once the infestation becomes well established, they will spread to most rooms of the house.

The bed bug is so tiny, microscopic in size, and their nocturnal feeding habits, make them hard to find in the daylight. They avoid any light and will scurry away for cover and concealment as soon as they are exposed to light.

Because bed bugs are not considered as disease transmitters like cockroaches, rodent, or flies, they are often ignored by health officials. Bites from these insects will leave a red rash that can develop into a severe itching feeling after a few hours depending on your sensitivity to the chemicals secreted by the bed bug as it feeds. This is the main result of being bitten as well as the anxiety the human feels at being bitten during sleep.

Bed bugs home in on our natural heat, the CO2 we exhale with every breath, and also the pheromones given off by our bodies. They use these beacons to unerringly guide themselves to their victims. They are predominantly night feeders on warm blooded animals, including humans.

Bed bugs are world wide travelers who readily fasten themselves to luggage items and stow away, traveling to a new destination. The insects are an incredible nuisance and once established, it is very difficult to get rid of bed bugs. Infestations of bed bugs and reported attacks are increasing rapidly in most populated areas. Bed bugs are well on the way to becoming a world wide pest, especially for travelers who venture internationally according to university entomologists.

The pests are very good at traveling. They are commonly found in large buildings where groups of humans live, such as apartments, dorms, prisons, hospitals, and hotels. But infestations can also occur in homes as well. A common way for bed bugs to be acquired is via luggage, dry cleaning, pets and even humans. Professional exterminators will tell you that bed bugs are as likely to be present in a five star hotel as they are in a run down flophouse. Bed bug outbreaks are often the result of travel to countries where the blood suckers are common.
