Are You A Candidate For A Tummy Tuck?

Tummy tucks are an increasingly popular elective procedure. The surgery itself is done to remove excess skin and tighten the abdominal wall. So who are the prime candidates for tummy tucks? One of the main things surgeons look for in a candidate is someone that has realistic expectations of the outcome of the surgery.

Someone that expects the procedure to completely fix their body and return their youth may not be the best candidate. Prime candidates for tummy tucks include women that have recently given birth by C-section and people that have lost large amounts of weight and can't seem to tighten their stomachs and anyone that finds their stomach unresponsive to exercise and a diet change. Older individuals are also great candidates for the surgery because the skin naturally loses elasticity during aging that the procedure can help repair.

Of course, anyone considering the procedure should consult with specialist to discuss the outcome of the procedure and possible risks. Tummy tucks performed are usually done in one of three ways and the decision is made based on each patient's specific problem. For example, liposuction works very well for some people but others with extreme excessive skin require a full tummy tuck. A complete tummy tuck surgery, referred to as an abdominoplasty, requires up to five hours.

Partial tummy tucks, on the other hand, can be completed in under 90 minutes. A full tummy tuck requires the surgeon to make an incision from hipbone to hipbone and another to disconnect the navel while a partial procedure means the navel may not be relocated at all. After the incisions have been made the surgeon will separate the skin from the underlying muscle wall and lift the flap of skin. The muscles are tightened by moving them closer together and stitching them in place.

The skin flap is next stretched down again over the newly tightened muscle and the extra skin is removed. A new hole is cut in the skin for the navel and all incisions are closed. The entire procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia. Specialists have spent years performing thousands of tummy tucks on all sorts of individuals.

Despite the fact that there are very few risks involved today, it is still important to schedule a consultation to go over the details. However, if you are a good candidate for the surgery the procedure may be just the thing to improve your self confidence and help reverse the aging process. Remember, good candidates include women that have given birth, naturally and by C-section, and want to tighten their abdominal muscles. Individuals that have lost a large amount of weight and still have excess skin can also benefit from a tummy tuck.

Older individuals that desire to reverse the aging process a bit are ideal candidates as well. Some folks that have excess weight on their stomach that just doesn't respond to weight loss attempts, can be helped by this surgery too. Tummy tuck surgeons are experts at this procedure and can help you decide if it's right for you.
