If you are thinking about purchasing a radar detector but are wondering if they are legal; relax because radar detectors are legal in all states except for Virginia and Washington DC. In addition to Virginia and Washington DC radar detectors are also not legal on military bases. Also, there is another law you should be familiar with and that is that radar detectors are illegal in all commercial vehicles over 10,000 pounds.

There are only three provinces in Canada that allow radar detectors and they are Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. If you are going overseas be sure to check the local laws for the area you are traveling because many overseas countries also ban radar detectors. Countries such as Portugal, Finland and Spain are a few of the overseas countries that ban the use of radar detectors.

If you are driving in an area where radar detectors are illegal you must not use your unit or have it turned on. The police in areas where radar detectors are illegal use a device called a Spectra that can detect a radar detector in your vehicle. The Spectra can detect virtually any radar detector. You must familiarize yourself with local traffic laws if you want to avoid a ticket. Local police will not "let you off" because you are visiting and do not know the laws. If you choose not to heed my advice and you get pulled over for using a radar detector do not argue with the police officer and do not try to talk your way out of the ticket. Many countries are not tolerant of this sort of behavior and you could land yourself in bigger trouble than just a ticket.

Radar jammers and laser jammers are more tools available to you to guard yourself from speeding tickets. There are nine states where radar jammers and laser jammers are not legal and those states are: Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, California, Oklahoma, Virginia, Colorado, Illinois and Washington DC.

There are many types of radar detectors, radar jammers and laser jammers on the market today so do your research carefully. Find a price range you can afford then be sure to find out what is included with your purchase; if you must buy accessories to install and to use your unit that will add to the price so don't forget to add that in. Do not forget you get what you pay for! Be sure you don't purchase a cheap radar detector that you will toss in the garbage the first chance you get - the cheaper machines seem to give more false alerts than the quality units do. Read as many radardetectorratings as you can find so that you can make an educated decision for your new radar detector. Many radardetectorratings will show you customer reviews, as well as, pros and cons. This is very useful when deciding which radar detector to buy.
