When Al Gore first invented the internet (he didn't really), he probably had no idea what means would be used for the achievement of businesses' ends. Who, in 1990, could have realized the potential of search engine optimization, for example? Yet these things are already so much a part of our lives, that to be ignorant of these would be business suicide. This internet marketing guide is a broad stroke of what you could use to survive, and possibly thrive with an online enterprise.

At present, the most popular search engine is undoubtedly Google. A little over a decade ago, nobody even knew what Google was. It would have been considered a misspelling of 'googol,' a number with 100 zeroes after it. Now, you hear it in films and television shows, and in general life, people telling people to 'Google' something to get more information on it. It is no surprise that a lot of marketing potential is derived from the use of Google applications.

Search engine optimization, or SEO, was mentioned earlier. This involves placing certain keywords within the text of a website so that the website achieves a high ranking when the keyword is searched by an internet user. How would you gauge whether your use of SEO was successful? You would look at its search ranking on Google, which is the most commonly used search engine after all.

More specifically, you could make use of Google's AdSense. Initially, a website owner has a website with certain texts in it. When this text is related to a certain product that you or another company or entity pays to be advertised, then the use of AdSense would make this advertisement come out and be featured wherever it is placed in the website. The owner gets a certain minimal amount per click on the link. It may seem that they are not making that much if you think of it in terms of one click, but if they are able to get many hits in the website, chances are a fraction of these would see the link and click on it. If views are by the thousands, then having strategic AdSense placements could already serve as a part time or even a full time profession for them. Of course, these articles would have to be riveting enough and be able to consistently attract people's attention, but that is not your immediate concern. By submitting the right keywords to be displayed in various websites, your product could be promoted in places you would not even have thought of.

Google also offers AdWords, wherein your online business can be featured on the sidebar for when a search query uses certain keywords related to your product. This is a definite way to get people's attention, at very little cost. AdWords is also used when a person using Google's mailing service has an e-mail with keywords relating to your product. You are thus able to make your product known to just about anybody.

As you can see, Google is a big factor when it comes to an online business. But it is not the only factor, and I suggest you read beyond this internet marketing guide for these other useful devices.
