As you age, stains will increase on all your teeth, this is due to the build up of bacteria on the teeth. The dis-coloration is often times either yellowish or light brown, both ways it may look unsightly. Laser whitening can be used to whiten the smile back to its starting natural color, or even further to give an even brighter smile. Professional teeth whitening is also commonly called laser teeth whitening or laser activated teeth whitening. It could be that the trouble is inside the teeth in which case it could be more useful to receive internal teeth bleaching.

The whitening procedure takes advantage of the whitening properties of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. The compounds work by having oxygen molecules sink into the teeth and break down the stains.
The effect of the whitening treatment are usually viewed in 1 hour, but depending upon the procedure taken treatment can last for a month.

By and large, with professional teeth whitening a mould is taken from your teeth and from this the teeth are whitened. A custom mould is made so that an even contact is achieved with the teeth as possible, it is important that the peroxide is applied equally. If it is not situated evenly then the teeth can appear with different colourations and this effect may not look very attractive. It is important to note that any false teeth or filling, or fixing to the teeth will not be effected by the teeth whitening procedure, it will stay the color it is. This means that the matching of color is advised to be done to the false teeth or filling or even have a different solution such as teeth veneers though note that this can cost a significant amount, if the color of the false teeth is not right these need to be sorted out first via replacement or another cosmetic treatment. Veneers are a not cheap procedure, and should only be embarked upon after great thought. Looking good has never been more accessible to the general public. The main cheap alternative to laser teeth whitening is home teeth whitening, this is where a kit is bought over the counter, or can be ordered online. Generally these kits will have a a teeth mould and contain gel which is to be coated on to the teeth. The better forms have moulds which shape against the teeth, while the less effective ones have a mould which is fixed in size. Three brands of whitening products are Rembrandt, Opalescence and Crest.

Some patients do experience pain during the procedure. However is generally short term in nature. There may be some sensitivity to the procedure however this is a normal consequence. Patients who have undergone the procedure generally identify the pain as being sporadic and fades away in two days. A special additional gel may be situated on the teeth which may help with this unfrequent pain. To decrease the sensitivity it is advisable to take care with what is eaten and drunk, generally avoid very hot or very cold food and drinks and any pain is minimised.

Once you have had teeth whitening it is important to keep the teeth in good condition to keep your teeth white for as long as possible. Tobacco will quickly stain teeth as will drinks such as coffee, tea or cola. Fruit juices can also have a staining effect. Generally, if you cannot steer clear these substances then it is prodent to reduce the contact your teeth have with the substance.
