Houston's largest park, Memorial Park, stretches for miles in every direction. On a sunny Sunday some 20,000 people will gather to Memorial Park where Houstonians can contribute in jogging, golfing, swimming, baseball, tennis, soccer, polo, archery, and rugby. However, no camping is permitted. The large Houston Park and Recreation Department greenhouse, which renders greenery to the city, is also in Memorial Park.

Houston is the hub of a varitable resort field which surrounds the city. The white sandy beaches and warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico are fifty miles to the south of the city and the Texas Hill Country with its piney woods, ranches, lakes and streams is within driving distance from the city to the northwest.

Houston's highway and freeway systems afford easy access to Galveston Island, fifty miles to the south. Often related to as Houston's playground, Galveston is a popular beach retreat for swimming, sunbathing and deep-sea fishing.

Another well-liked recreation area south of Houston is the Sylvan Beach and Pavilion, a Harris County facility for outdoor diversion located at the La Porte section of Galveston Bay. Open throughout the year for fishing, it offers picnic areas, playgrounds, boat launches and an air-conditioned banquet and dance pavilion for private parties.

North of Houston there are three lakes offering a recreational oasis. Lake Houston is situated in the northeast quadrant of Harris County, just east of Humble. Lake Houston is man-made lake on San Jacinto River, created in 1954. It is used largely as an area for water skiers and small boat sailors and is also a fisherman's harbor.

The lake squads with channel catfish, blue catfish, black bass, perch, crappie and yellow catfish. Lake Houston is encircled on its south shore by Alexander Deussen Park, which offers such public facilities as picnicking areas, concessions, camping, pavilion and free boat launching. Atascocita Country Club, a private membership company, is located on the west end of the lake.

Lake Livingston is both the prominent and the deepest of the three lakes. It has a shoreline of 650 miles and lies down almost midway between Interstate 45, and the northern-end near Huntsville, Us Highway 59, at the southern end at Livingston. Of the three lakes, Livingston offers the fullest range of accommodations, with all things from public camping sites to private developments and a large-scale resort, including two restaurants and elegant overnight facilities.

Lake Conroe is the area's youngest man-made lake and one of the best black bass havens in Montgomery County. This clear water, 20,985 acre reservoir began filling in 1973. It is located about 50 miles from downtown Houston, 25 miles north of the burgeoning FM-1960 area, and about four miles west of Interstate 45 at Conroe. Made on the San Jacinto River, it is 19 miles long and five miles wide.
