Accent reduction is clouded in a mystery to many of us. Some people may wonder if it is even possible at all to accomplish. I am here to tell you that it is absolutely possible and happens all the time. Go to any movie or play someday and listen to actors born in the United States performing roles requiring British, French, German, or any other kind of accent for that matter. Some are obviously better than others. The question is, how do they do it? This is actually the reverse of accent reduction but the main part of the process is the same. Do you want to know what it is?

It is as plain as the nose on your face it is something called listening. Yes, it is really that simple. Oh sure, there are lots of techniques for learning accent reduction. Some are better than others. In my signature, you will find an excellent method. But no method is really going to get you to that true level of natural accent reduction unless you learn to just simply listen. Let me get right to the point.

Suppose you use one particular method of accent reduction to emulate a person speaking American english. This will only get you through the door. Why? The reason is because of the way Americans speak the language that has nothing to do with having an accent. For that matter, even Americans from down south who speak with a southern drawl have one thing in common with the rest of Americans…it is how they emphasize certain words in a sentence. It is a rising and falling pattern that is very unique to American speakers. People born outside the United States do not have this pattern of speaking by nature. Thus, accent reduction alone is not going to get them the results they desire, the ability to speak like everyone else in America. This is something most people promoting accent reduction programs do not and will not tell you.

The sad part is, you have just finished a course to help you with your problem and while you no longer speak with whatever accent you walked into the course with, you now sound very hollow in the way you speak and do not really sound like a native born American speaker. The only way this is going to happen is if you actually listen to American born speakers and recognize that rising and falling pattern.

Again, listen to American actors imitating foreign accents. The very best of them are very good because they actually listen to the way these people speak. Once you understand and learn how to do this, you can master any language from any country and sound like you were born there. To learn how to do this properly is the next step.
