• Airless paint spraying and High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) paint spraying are different techniques of spray painting. Airless paint spraying is typically used for large surface areas; whereas, HVLP spray is usually for small surface areas requiring a better finish. Both have their unique advantages and disadvantages.
• Both can be carried on site, and can be used as per the requirements of the job.
• An airless paint sprayer uses very high fluid (coating) pressures for atomization; whereas, a HVLP paint sprayer uses high volumes of low-pressure heated air for atomization.
• The atomizing pressure inside an airless paint sprayer is 1,000 to 3,000 lbf/in2 (pound/force per square inch or psi); whereas, the atomizing pressure inside an HVLP paint sprayer does not exceed 10 lbf/in2.
• An airless paint sprayer forces the paint to come through a small opening in the spray gun. When the paint emerges from the opening into the massive internal pressure, it breaks apart into atomized droplets. These atomized droplets then emerge from the spray gun and under their own momentum are attached to the surface to be painted resulting in overspray though large surface areas can be rapidly covered. With a HVLP paint sprayer, turbine technology or conversion spray gun technology is used. Here the HVLP spray gun is supplied with high volumes of low-pressure heated air, which then atomizes the paint, and along with the momentum of the air, the paint particles are attached to the surface, however the transfer efficiency results in more overspray and the application rate means that it is only viable to use HVLP to cover a small surface area. The use of heated air by HVLP spray reduces the cooling of the paint particles, thereby reducing the process of condensation of atmospheric moisture. Due to this, the solvent evaporating from the coating droplets is also stabilized.
• An airless paint sprayer cannot be used to paint multi-color (fleck) painting jobs; whereas, a HVLP spray gun is ideal for fleck painting jobs utilizing a large nozzle/needle setup of 2.8mm. To preserve the fleck particles, atomization is avoided.
• An airless paint sprayer is used to paint houses, exteriors, walls, fences, barns, buildings, bridges, ships, storage tanks, wagons, etc as well as for applying industrial finishes. HVLP paint sprayers are extensively used for automobiles, trim decorative finishes, shutters, cabinets, furniture, wood and metal working, and other products requiring restoration quality paint jobs.
