There are many horror stories about affiliate programs and networks. People have heard them over and over again and are wary of joining. Pyramid schemes and new program launches account for most of the affiliate marketing bad press. Fundamentally an affiliate market promotes many useful products, but pyramid schemes often only promote a few or none..

You do not want to be associated with pyramid schemes. Associate yourself with companies that offer top notch products. The growing number of people who have joined affiliate programs and become successful is proof enough that there are reliable and quality affiliate programs out there. The fail rates for affiliate marketers is high, but many factors cause that including failure to act or lack of skill.

Why affiliate marketing?

You can work your own hours. In time you can build residual income that does not depend on your daily work. You become an independent business owner. Cost savings are a major attraction as you can live and work almost anywhere. Affiliate programs have already created many millionaires. This proves that diligence and persistence create successful network or affiliate marketers.

Many skills are required to become a successful affiliate marketer and you must either possess the skills or be willing to devote the time for acquisition. Affiliate or network marketing is all about sales so you really have to like interacting with people.

Which affiliate program is your best choice? Here are some tips you may want to look over before choosing one:

1. One of the best ways to know if a program is appealing is if you wish to purchase the product for yourself. If that is the case, chances are, there are many others who are also interested in the same program and products.

2. It is important to find a program that has some authority in its industry and has top notch products.

3. Selection of programs that offer products with real value is all important. The only way to determine if the company is legitimate is to do research. Visit the affiliate program forum to see if members are complaining. Visit independent forums (non marketing forums) and search for scams to see if there are complaints about the company.

4. The program should be associated with a growing target market. In order to make sales and referrals you will need a steady growth trend.

5. A program with a compensation plan that pays out a residual income and a payout of 30% or more would be a great choice. There are many programs which offer that type of compensation. Compare and carefully scrutinize each program. You will want to get the best value for all your work.

6. Be aware that some programs have sales targets or commission minimums that must be satisfied. If the targets appear to be unreachable, don't waste your time and money promoting that program.

7. Select an affiliate company that offers tools, resources and support to help you grow your business in the shortest possible time. Always select programs that have these resources.

8. The program should allow you to check sales and compensation online anytime and anywhere.

9. Strong incentive rewards for membership renewals should be offered to affiliates.

If a company provides continuing support and resources it will retain more of its affiliates and that will assure the growth of your network. The most important thing you can do is to thoroughly investigate each program you consider. The more knowledge you have, the more likely you are to make good choices and succeed.
