The insurance market is incredibly competitive, particularly when it comes to car insurance. When it comes to shopping for a good deal the competition can make things rather confusing, but it also means that there are some great deals out there, if you can find them.

All the competitiveness has meant that companies are always trying different things to sell their policies. Gone are the days of just paying to have your car insured, there are now a raft of optional extras that can make the cheapest policy offer less good value. All of this can get a bit confusing, but it's important to remember the point of car insurance.

The point of getting car insurance (aside from the fact that it's a legal requirement for driving on the roads) is to cover you in event of an accident, or in case your car suffers damage or is stolen. All of the extras are exactly that, and not entirely necessary.

Once that's done you'll need to work out certain things that matter to insurance companies. The main ones are the amount you drive, do you have off-road parking, do you have a no-claims bonus that you want to protect, who else drives you car, and where do you live.

Once you've got all this information in hand, you can start looking for policies. The policy is the main point, so low prices are good, but don't restrict your search to much, keep an eye out for the cheapest three or four that offer the cover you need.

After that the decision becomes easier, you know exactly what kind of policy you want, it's just a case of getting the best value. This is where optional extras come in. Do you already have a rescue policy? If so, you don't need to spend extra money, or pay for an insurance policy that offers one (because even if they claim it's free, the price is included somewhere). Do you have a deal with a garage that is great and you find them reliable? If so, you don't need that as an option. Do you have expensive electrics in your car? Do you frequently carry a handbag with valuable items?

As a final note of warning, when searching for policies check comparison websites, individual insurers and intermediaries like Auto Direct, the more places you search, the better your chance of finding a great deal, don't be conned into thinking that comparison websites and the beginning and end of it.

Getting a really great car insurance deal is about patience and putting in the legwork, but the sums of money you could save are really quite considerable, and with everything so much more complex than just insurance, it's making the most out of the optional extras where you can really make a saving.
