One Monday morning it was a demanding day for the speech and hearing clinic. In order to detect speech and hearing impairments in children, a speech clinician or a hearing technician examined twenty five of them. With the help of a junior league volunteer technician and a staff speech pathologist 537 children from various preschools were given similar screenings. From these children, they asked 61 to return for a hearing retest and 86 for speech.

Various preschools participated in the screening program and from these children some found out that they have normal speech and hearing capabilities and the others were advised to go and get reassessed. According to the head of the local speech and hearing facility, they want to determine possible problems with hearing and speech early on before these worsen and develop into life altering handicaps. A model for language and speech development applies to everyone and they are not looking for perfect skills in children on the preschool level, but they want to see if these children have been able to match the standard one way or another, because falling behind may lead to serious problems later on in life.

With much time before formal schooling starts, the children can have their conditions treated after the examinations were able to find several severe cases. Mentioned by a volunteer, some of the parents of the children were worrywarts about the speech and hearing of their kids. A project like this has its rewards in the form of being able to inform a parent that a child is free from problems.

The volunteer program began with one volunteer training another volunteer in the technique used to screen hearing. After a while, screenings were scheduled for each one of the nursery schools within their area that these two ladies managed to contact. After the hearing tests that were given to all students several more children were assessed for speech and language as advised by teachers. Offered to the parents of those children who were absent or were not able to pass the screenings were new schedules for retests to be conducted in a clinic located at a certain area.

Components for the screenings included reaction to sound stimuli, speech sound usage, vocabulary, and sentence construction for each case and the examiners looked for disparities in terms of a child's level of development in these areas corresponding to his age level to see what actions might be necessary. The evaluations resulted in a number of referrals and some suggestions for home management. Suggestions for treatment were also given to several cases that were referred for more exams.

When a child is suspected to have some problems with regard to speech and hearing, then the local speech and hearing clinic can offer a comprehensive evaluation that takes two to three hours to finish. It is possible to consider some options for treatment after the receiving the results from the screenings and these are inclusive of a home program, weekly sessions done in groups or one by one, and a daily intensive preschool program.

It has been said that whatever happens a child at this young age will benefit tremendously because of the preventive and therapeutic nature of what is being done here. From the preschool classes there were six that need to be screened and a date for the rescreening will also be arranged so that the parents can start making calls for appointments.
