The airline industry is very competitive these days, and this means that it is possible to find cheap flights to wide variety of locations if you know how to look and book. Here are a few guidelines.

As with much else in life these days, the internet is the first place to look for bargains. The type of site that can find the best deals online depends on the nature of your holiday arrangements.

If you have set dates booked off work, and know where you want to travel, the type of site you need to use is called a screenscraper. Screenscrapers are comparison sites that take the details you enter, and use them to search a large range of flight booking websites to find the cheapest option available.

There are plenty of last minute deals when it comes to booking package holidays, but in general, the way to secure standalone cheap flights is to book as early as possible. Last minute flight bookings are often required by business travellers, who use company budgets to ensure that they can travel when they need to, and the airline companies can charge a lot of money for these kinds of bookings ? making many last minute bookings expensive for all.

However, there is an exception to this rule that is thrown up by the way that the package holiday industry works. Package tour operators charter planes to fly to specific locations, but will often not get enough bookings to completely fill the plane. At the last minute, these empty seats stand to make the tour operator no money ? and the plane has already been chartered in its entirety. These seats are often practically given away at the last minute in a bid to squeeze at least a little extra income from the charter, and can be found through charter comparison websites.

While you may begin you research looking for separate flights and accommodation, this may only be the cheapest option if you are going off the beaten track for an irregular amount of time ? if you will be travelling on a regular departure day, and away for 7, 10 or 14 days to a popular location you may well find that the cheapest option comes in a package.

When you have found a cheap flight, make sure that the broker does not automatically add travel insurance to the package ? this is fairly standard procedure. Expensive travel insurance is the way that many budget airlines turn a lot of their profit ? you can almost always find separate travel insurance cheaper from a different broker.

Certain locations benefit from the multi-ethnic make-up of Britain, in that specialist travel agents supply cheap flights to and from places like Israel, Poland and Jamaica. If you will be travelling to such a location, it is always worth checking out these specialist travel agents for cheap flights.
