The most common type of fungal infection in the world today is a yeast infection. The most common place on the human body that is infected is the female genitalia simply because fungus love a warm, moist, dark place to live in. In saying that, it is not uncommon for men to be infected with mutated yeasts. They just don't get infected anywhere near as often.

The human body has a natural bacterial balance of friendly bacteria, bad bacteria and yeasts. The friendly bacteria keep everything else under control, and they are very important to your good health. The Candida yeast lives in warm dark areas of your body such as the ears, genitalia, mouth and intestines. Overweight individuals can also suffer from fungal overgrowth in folds of skin.

Candidiasis is also known as a yeast infection because it is caused by yeast cells. When they multiply they do so by cloning themselves through bulbs that grow from within them. The bulbs stay attached to them for a while before they let go, and then go on to repeat the process. This process goes on in a healthy body without causing any harm as it happens in all of us.

So how does a yeast infection actually start in the human body? Fungal overgrowth usually starts when the chemical and/or bacterial balance of the body has been disturbed. These changes cause the beneficial bacteria to die, and then the yeast cells are left to do what they want to. This effect allows them to change into an aggressive fungus that then start feeding on the cells of your body. They also start replicating themselves as fungus instead of harmless Candida.

The signs that you have yeast and fungus breeding in your body at a faster rate then usual don't take that long to appear. It usually starts with itching, soreness and burning in the areas where the fungus is breeding the most. These are warm, moist, dark areas of your body. What you must remember not to do is start scratching these areas as this can encourage the fungus to breed even faster, and make the symptoms a lot worse.

Other signs include fatigue, drowsiness, muscle aches, pain or swelling in the joints, dizziness, fluid retention, tissue swelling, loss of balance, lack of coordination, lack of concentration, poor memory, mood swings, depression, anxiety, irritability, and cravings for sugars, carbohydrates and alcohol. But these are also common symptoms for other sicknesses, so they must be taken into consideration along with more reliable indicators.

The overgrowth also causes specific side-effects in afflicted areas. Just for a quick overview of a few of them, fungal overgrowth causes white patches on the inside of the mouth. Your digestion can be effected as fungus will feed on the food that you eat causing fermentation of the food instead of it being properly digested. A white, cottage cheese like discharge coming from the genitalia is also a common symptom.
