There are many sizes, styles, an designs of tiles. However, the materials used in creating tiles has changed very little. Tile companies located in many cities and towns use the same components that were used when the first tiles were made.

Depending on the size of a room and the effect that one wants to achieve with the tiles, sizes may vary. An individual may wish to use larger eighteen inch tiles in a larger area. In small areas, tiles as small as a half inch are used as decorative accessories on back-splashes or as artistic additions to a neutral area. Tiles are a very popular choice in areas where there is a lot of foot traffic. Since they do not wear in the same way that carpeting does, they maintain their beauty and condition for several years longer than carpeting that is made for use in high traffic areas.

The use of tiles in other countries provides some dazzling displays of creativity. In Mexico or Spain one will find that artisans of tile have included the color and drama of the culture into their tiles. Homes and plazas provide visitors with the classic designs that have been perfected over hundreds of years. Many of the cathedrals in these countries have stunning sculptures and designs embedded in the floor using tiles that form mosaics.
