Road maps are an essential must have for any driver. Generally housed in the glove compartment of a vehicle, these maps are used to help guide and aid in the guidance of travels on roadways. These are useful tools to ensure you never get lost and always know where you are going and how you are going to get there.

Aside from recent technologies and digital navigational equipment, it is always a good idea to invest in a road map. The good old trusty road map never malfunctions, gives false information, or shuts down like the new digital map software does. The only way to receive incorrect directions from a map is to read it wrong.

With todays educational systems and courses in schools, difficulties reading maps are now becoming a problem of the past. Social studies, geography, and even math teachers all over the world use maps as a teaching resource. The educational system's main purpose for using atlases and maps is to help teach direction, distance, land terrain and even basic common sense.

It was through primitive drawings that early man could communicate as to where food could be hunted, water found, and even where shelter could be found. Though nowhere near the design of current maps, these maps served the purpose of that of wilderness maps in which today's traditional boy or girl scouts use. There are even some wilderness camps that only use this type of map.

Since the dawn of mankind, there have been in existence in some form or another, maps. Dating back to the era of hieroglyphics which were used by Egyptians, all the way to the early primitive cave man, there have been maps. Although these maps were not of highways, they were however guides to specific places such as where to find and locate sources of water, food, and even shelter. As man evolved, so did the ability to document locations.

Map collections, also referred to as atlases were introduced to the world by a geographer by the name of Abraham Ortelius in 1560 A. D. These however did not include some of the features that it now does today, due to the fact that at the time certain specific technologies used to elaborate on some information had yet been invented. This means that these maps did not show areal views, aspect ratios, or even intersections, since none of these had yet been invented.

Atlases also differ from regular maps because of their features. An atlas usually includes data and information on the features of the country in which a map is targeting, as well as information on its climate, population, natural resources and even its topography. These map collections originated in second century A. D., and were modernized and introduced in 1570 by a Flemish geographer named Abraham Ortelius.

Perhaps the evolution of man and technology is a good thing, but you must consider that at one point and time, something as simple as interpreting a road map was vital to survival. This is why many wilderness organizations still insist upon keeping the tradition of map reading alive.
