One of the ancient powerhouses of Mediterranean and world history Turkey has recentlly emerged as one of the great holiday destinations. But you may be wondering why this country, steeped in ancient history and proud tradition, where Europe meets Asia, is so popular. Sophisticated, beautiful and alluring, Turkey can be many different things to many different people such is its depth and diversity. Whether you have a particular interest in culture, architecture, sailing, skiing, shopping or just taking it easy in the sun with a cool drink and a good book, Turkey has something for everyone.

Is any trip to Turkey complete without a visit to one of the world's most dazzlingly hectic and vibrant cities – Istanbul? Istanbul (one of Europe's 3 Cities of Culture in 2010) with its dome and minaret filled skyline is a thriving city of 16 million inhabitants. Centre of the former Ottoman Empire it shares a wealth of historic and religious treasures most of which are to be found in the Sultanahmet-Old City. Breathtaking architectural highlights include the Sultanahmet Mosque (Blue Mosque) and the Hagia Sophia as well as any number of the beautiful palaces on the shore of the Bosporus. Then there's Cappadocia in central Turkey: a series of amazing volcanic rock formations, remarkable caves and underground cities merged into an other-wordly landscape. In the east the snowy mountains of Eastern Anatolia border Iran whilst in the north Turkey meets the Black sea.

Most people when considering a in Turkey tend to either think of Istanbul or western and southern Turkey. Hardly surprising as these are the two main tourist destinations. In particular the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts are famous for some of the cleanest, quietest and unspoilt beaches in the world. The Aegean Sea coast is the most westerly part of the country and has more sites of historical interest than anywhere in the whole of Turkey. Well-known destinations along this part of the coast include Izmir, (one of the three largest cities in Turkey), Bodrum and Marmaris. Stroll ancient olive groves or woodland areas and bathe in crystal clear turquoise seas. One place not to miss is Ephesus, one of Turkey's most famous ancient tourist attractions, only 4km from the small town of Selkuk.

A continuation of the Aegaen coast to the south and east, Turkey's Mediterranean coast is squeezed in between the pine-covered Taurus Mountains (Toros) and the Mediterranean Sea. Antalya Province is well known for itsclear waters and beautiful shorelines. Away from the sea resorts are the waterfalls at Manavgat, butterfly colonies at Butterfly Valley, a famous beautiful blue lagoon at Ölüdeniz and the opportinity to take a traditional mud bath, if you can stand the unusual smell. Some of the better-known resorts in the area include Fethiye and Antalya.

In Turkey, holidays are what you make them and accommodation options are almost as endless as the attractions and leisure pursuit opportunities on offer. Opt for a luxury villa in Turkey or go for a stylish 5 Star hotel – either way you will enjoy the holiday of lifetime in one of the world's fastest emerging holiday destinations.
