A Glimpse Of Portugal's Past

You don't need to spend too long on holiday in Portugal before your discover its interesting past - it practically infuses the air. From the Convento de Cristo in Tomar to the many impressive churches and cathedrals, there are numerous relics and architectural structures that give you an insight into how this country has developed and become the jewel it is today.

The past has left Portugal with many ancient treasures. Parts of the centre of Portugal date back thousands and thousands of years. Even during the Bronze Age, the country had already established important trade links with the Mediterranean Basin. The Roman occupation of Portugal saw its skyline filled with imposing and impressive buildings, many of which still stand today. The Great Wall of Porto is one such example. The original layout was reconstructed in the 12th Century and re-fortified in the 14th Century. It stretches around the Hills of Sė and sweeps down to the river where a harbour was also built. The Romans also built an important road network between Lisbon and Braga, which is still used by traders and tourists alike today.

Central Portugal is home to many historical sites, many with religious origins. The Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima is one of the most important sites of Marian history in the world, attracting over four million visitors each year. In addition to its striking architecture, this shrine is said to be the place where the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children in 1917. She is said to have shared with them three prophecies, known as the Three Secrets of Fatima and the central plaza is still an impressive structure.

A slightly less esoteric experience, although just as interesting, must be the Capela dos Ossos – also known as the Chapel of Bones. Rather than burying the dead, in the 16th Century the monks here chose to incorporate their skeletons into the architecture. The result is a consecrated chapel in which human bones line the walls and pillars. They say bones from over 5000 bodies make up parts of the structures – apart from those of the monks themselves, which are kept in a small white coffin in the chapel.

Luxury villas in Portugal are now a very popular choice. Although Portugal is well known for its commercial resorts, there are other hotels, apartments and villas in Portugal that are set well away from the crowded tourist beaches offering seclusion, splendour and luxury. Portugal villas can be found on private beaches and close to unspoilt villages in parts of Portugal that remain unchanged since they were first founded. Despite their more remote locations, many of these villas in Portugal offer all the comforts of home and all the modern conveniences you would expect from contemporary accommodation. Whilst many of these buildings use traditional designs to blend in with their environment, many are equipped with indulgent features such as Jacuzzis and swimming pools. Tranquil and peaceful surroundings after a hard day's time-travelling in this most fascinating of countries are something only villas can provide.
