Often, as marriages go through difficulties it can become harder to concentrate on the good times than on the struggles. Often, you and your partner create expectations of each other that can cause disappointment and conflict if they're not met, especially in a failing marriage. As daily interactions become filled with more conflict than agreement, you might wonder if you're on the way to a divorce.

If your marriage is in trouble, one of the first steps you can take to rescue it is just to remind yourself why the relationship matters. Take some time to make a mental note about the things that are positive about your relationship, even if they are things that don't happen all the time. See if you can recall what was compelling about your spouse that brought you together in the beginning. When things get difficult, you can refer back to these memories and special things to help you make it through--but only if you take the time to remember them.

One of the hardest parts of saving a failing marriage is to confront the issues that are destructive to the relationship. Sadly, many decide that it is easier to ignore the problems with the hope that they will eventually go away. In fact, it is important that you make sure those problems are revealed so they can be dealt with. You might start with asking your spouse some questions about what they would like to be different about the relationship. Be willing to consider their opinion and make sure that you're listening.

Once you've found the reasons for your conflicts, you can start evaluating different options. Be ready to make changes immediately if you know something that you can do to change the situation. This will require sacrifices and making difficult choices. Be sure that you're the first one to make an effort. This will show your spouse know you're serious about fixing that failing marriage for good.

Of course, having a good marriage is not only about finding answers to various conflicts. It is common for the passion and the romance that characterized your early time together to fizzle out once the grind of running a household and going to work comes into the picture. If you want to have any chance to save your failing marriage, you will need to devote time to rekindling that natural attraction between you and your partner. You will have to be imaginative and willing to come up with lots of ideas that can bring you closer again. Surprise dates, vacations, special gifts are all way to draw that other person back.

When things are strained in your lives together, the best tools you have are honesty and communication. This doesn't mean that it's easy to talk when the tension is strong, but you must try to keep focused. You must keep sharing thoughts and feelings with your spouse as you're working on the relationship.

If you want to save a failing marriage, you have to believe that it will take dedication and work. When you love your spouse, there shouldn't be any reason why you can't make this happen. Any emotional walls you've constructed around yourself can be destroyed if you stay flexible about your differences and you're ready to make changes to the general routine.
