The proper cosmetics for any skin type is key in creating a fresh and natural appearance and to prevent reactions to certain products, such as allergies that cause rashes, itching and weeping or breakouts with whiteheads or blackheads and painful skin eruptions. Everybody's skin is unique and different areas on a person's face usually have different characteristics that need to be taken into account when choosing the right cosmetics.

If you have been less than impressed when your eye shadow creases and slides before lunch or your foundation looks lined and caked, understanding the characteristics of your skin and purchasing the right cosmetics for your skin type is an important exercise. Here are some simple guidelines to help illuminate these issues:'

Avoid cosmetics that dry or irritate your skin
Every skin type will react differently to the many types of cosmetics. Even if a certain brand works for your eye shadow, the same brand may not cut it for lipstick. This is due to the fact that the skin type on your eyelids is probably different from the skin type on your lips. When you are picking out cosmetics such as foundation, avoid drying cosmetics that cause you to break out. Unfortunately, you might have to try a few different products in order to determine those that work best on your skin on a regular basis. Another issue to pay attention to is that your skin may build up a reaction to a certain cosmetic that did not previously cause a skin irritation, so you might be forced to find an alternative to a tried and true brand which worked well in the days past. Skin characteristics can change tremendously over a lifetime as well, forcing a change in the brand of cosmetics that you choose.

Consider your skin tone when choosing cosmetics

Even if you find a brand of cosmetic that is just right for your skin type, choosing the wrong color will make the cosmetics less than attractive. Choose cosmetics that complement and match your skin tone and slight imperfections in skin tone and texture will not show. Darker foundations, deeper colors for eye shadow and eyeliner will look best on those with chocolate or olive skin tones. At the other end of the spectrum, pale skin suits lighter shades of foundation and eye makeup. Cosmetics should enhance, but never overpower the skin tones.

Invest in quality makeup
Quality makeup can get painful to the pocket book, however it shows on your skin. Cheap makeup tends to cake and slide on your skin and isn't as easy to blend. It is more likely to sit on the surface, giving a shiny plastic look. Search for good quality cosmetics that aren't necessarily expensive. It is better to invest in yourself by purchasing quality makeup that you know looks great with your skin type.

Dry Skin
Don't panic if you are the victim of dry skin. You should choose a mousse or crème type foundation. If you use a concealer, be sure it is cream based and your compact powder should be pressed compact powder. You should stay away from loose powder or oil free formulas as they are likely to settle in the fine lines on your face. Eye makeup looks its best when done with silk textured powder or crème eye shadows and eyeliner should be either a shimmer pencil or the matte type. Moisture is the key word with lipsticks glosses. Find a moisturizing lipstick and use lip gloss that has ingredients such as aloe or vitamin E, both of which will give you additional lip moisture.

Sensitive Skin
Search for cosmetics that are labeled specifically for use with sensitive skin and stay away from fragrances in your cosmetic products. Non-allergenic is another phrase to look for on the ingredients labels. The main thing is to avoid anything with high dye levels or preservatives.

Combination Skin
You can either choose different cosmetics for different skin conditions on your face or you can select products which are specially created for combination skin. Even normal skin often has areas that are more or less oily than other areas.

Oily Skin
For oily skin, try oil free primer before applying a matte foundation that won't clog your pores. Loose powder has less oils than pressed powder. Blot your skin periodically throughout the day to remove any shine. Stay away from cremes for eye shadow or mascara and creamy style lip pencils.

Cleanser options
Don't use harsh or drying cleansers or greasy cleansers since either extreme will react unfavorably with your skin. The best skin cleanser, no matter what your skin type is a water soluble cleanser that is gentle on the skin.
