Imagine sitting down to a gloriously smooth cup of coffee after a rushed, stressful day, taking a long slow puff from your cigarette…Ahhh! You are supposed to be giving up smoking!

Everyday life can easily get in the way when you are attempting to change habits. It might be the simplest of things that you do as part of your routine which can be the trigger points that you need to identify and overcome to ensure that you still change habits.
When you are enjoying drinking your coffee or tea expect to feel a strong urge to continue your habit by reaching for a cigarette, lifting your painfully short nails to your mouth or ordering a sugary treat that you actually don't need. As a smoker you may also expect that coffee, and food in general, will not taste the same when you quit.

Lots of people trying to change habits have become accustomed to indulging in their bad habits when drinking coffee or tea with or after meals and during their coffee/tea breaks.

It is important to understand that you do not have to quit these small pleasures of life to change habits (unless it's a caffeine addiction that you are attempting to break!). When temptation strikes, you simply need to have an action plan in place.

In order to make your habit change work you can try some, or all, of these habit breaking tricks:

1. Change to decaffeinated coffee, especially if breaking your habit is making you irritable. You could also switch to a herbal tea, although that might be a step too far for many professional coffee drinkers!
2. Take time to really enjoy your coffee or tea rather than rushing. Remember what it is that you enjoy about your drinks. The aroma, the taste, the pretty pictures on the top of your coffee.
3. Eat healthy food while on your break. When I have a coffee I am always tempted to order something sweet to go with it. This is simply another habit that you need to watch.
4. As you drink your coffee or tea, make sure your hands are kept busy. Keep the cup in your hands, do a crossword or update your diary.
5. Have your coffee or tea break with someone who has some interesting conversation. A fun way to distract yourself and reconnect with people.
6. Take a good book or magazine with you on your break. A great read is a fantastic way to distract you from cravings.
7. Use your support group and let co-workers know that you have quit, so they will know not to offer you a cigarette while you are on a coffee/tea break.

One of the most important parts of habit breaking, and one I think that is often overlooked, is not to be too hard on yourself if you slip up. Your aim is not to be perfect, rather it is to gradually make lasting changes to your lifestyle.
