4 Disadvantages to Working At Home You Must Cautiously Reflect on Ahead of Starting Your Own Business

Work at home, in my opinion, is great. But having worked from home successfully since 2004, I know that there are a load of disadvantages to doing so. It is not something that is fitting for everyone. Have a think through these points before you jump feet first into your own home based business.

You Have To Be Committed
Plenty of people I talk to cannot believe that I can successfully work at home for just this reason. Wake up in the morning, perhaps have a lie in, go and watch a bit of TV, pop out to the shops for a bit of the old retail therapy and a cup of coffee, meet an old friend for lunch and then go for a game of golf. Get back home just in time for the school run and after that play with the children.

Sounds great, but where in that list is the time to actually do some work? You have to be fully commited and realise that by home working you must get up in the morning, switch on the PC and sit there and do some work. It is very easy to get into bad habits and you need to set a working routine to make sure you get the weekly hours through.

Everyone Thinks You Have All The Time In The World
You will be amazed at how everyone treats you in a different way, just because you are self employed from home. If anyone needs to be volunteered to sort something, it is you. Friends and family believe that you can pop over every day for pet and baby sitting or aiding them with the shopping. Trying to tie down the work hours is testing enough for yourself, but then your friends and family volunteer you for everything. Even building sets for dance shows in my case!

No Office Banter
If you enjoy a little bit of office banter, chatting next to the coffee machine round the office whatever and sharing your daily problems with your fellow workers, then sitting enclosed in your own office may seem rather a let down. This is the one aspect of working for someone else that I miss, but thankfully I have a very supportive wife who is always there to listen when buyers annoy me and do what I think are stupid things.

You Are Your Own Boss
It sounds magnificent, but as your own boss you are responsible for driving in all new work, sorting the legal and financial sides and every little job, probably even to office cleaner. Whilst most of these are not a problem, if your own business is your primary source of income then any security of your previous job can vanish and you will at times be wondering where the next cheque might come from. This lack of knowledge of where your next bit of income is coming from can be quite stressful. Collect in lots of payments at once and whatch your bank balance increase and you get a good feeling. But have a lean month or two and it can be a worry!
