Using a Steel Building as Your Home

In my years of working for Price A Building, I've had a few customers who purchased their steel buildings to use as their homes. I thought that was the greatest idea. Not only will a home have the strength and durability of steel underneath it, there are so many other factors to prove the benefits of using metal buildings as the basis for homes. One of the first benefits that comes to mind is how a steel building isn't affected by the horrible effects of things like termites and dry rot like a wood frame building would be. Plus the prefab steel buildings are designed and engineered to withstand the forces of nature associated with the area in which the metal building is going to be located. I've actually seen a picture of an area devastated by a hurricane and the only thing left standing was a steel barn. So when you're making decisions about what construction materials and methods to use when building your dream home, don't forget to consider all of the pluses associated with steel prefab buildings.

There are architects out there who specialize in designing homes using the foundation of prefab metal buildings as the starting point for residences. If this is the route you choose, it won't be hard to find the right architect for your project. Steel buildings can be designed with second floors and lofts, large overhangs to create incredible porches, and can also be designed in other shapes than just the basic box type building people use for steel garages or steel barns. They can have hipped roofs common on most residential structures and also dormers. Dormers create usable space in the roof of the home by adding headroom and typically have a window to let in natural light in an area that usually doesn't get much. They also add attractiveness to the outside of the home.

There are also several options for the outside facade of the steel building that will become your home. The customers I mentioned earlier had their buildings designed so the wall sheeting could be place horizontally instead of vertically, therefore mimicking the way a traditional home's siding is installed. So when you're comparing your steel building prices, make sure you let your sales rep know that you would like this look for yours because it will affect the design and possibly the price. Also, you can choose to delete all of the steel sheeting and replace it with a layer of plywood and finished with the facade of your choice, whether that be stucco, stone or brick.

It's amazing how many options are out there that can enable you to turn a steel building into something completely unique to use as your residence. You can capitalize on the industrial look of a steel building and keep that decor going with your interior choices and decorating as well.
