Consumer awareness, as it pertains to toxin-free shampoo, is increasing rapidly. As more research is performed and more studies are released, consumers are realizing the risks associated with the industrial chemical ingredients in grocery store brand shampoo, and they are searching for an alternative.
Diethanolamine (DEA), which has been classed as a carcinogen, is used as an emulsifier and foaming agent in shampoo. The federal National Toxicology Program (NTP) completed a study in 1998 which discovered an association between the topical application of diethanolamine (and DEA-related ingredients) and cancer. The study suggested that residual levels of DEA were responsible for the carcinogenic response in the study. In addition, DEA in shampoos and other personal care products can result in the formation of nitrosamines, which have caused cancer in laboratory animals and been linked with human cancers. Nitrosamines are especially dangerous in personal care products because they can be absorbed through the skin.
The Food and Drug Administration expressed its concern about the contamination of personal care products with nitrosamines in a notice published in the Federal Register of April 10, 1979 (44 FR 21365). Since then, thousands of studies have been performed, and results have not swayed the original findings. Belonging to a class of chemicals known as alkanolamines, DEA has also been linked to kidney, liver, and other organ damage, according to several government-funded research studies.
Traditional media sources, as well as internet media, have drawn attention to these studies, increasing consumer awareness. For example, in the late 1990’s, the media exploded with the story of a 1995 study, funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, which stated that DEA has low acute toxicity and a significant cumulative toxicity. Results concluded that DEA actually builds up in the fatty tissues of the liver, brain, kidneys, and spleen with repeated dermal exposure. Research has shown that as DEA collects in the tissues abnormalities can occur which may lead to tissue and nerve damage as well as premature death (Matthew et al., 1995).
Since consumer awareness has increased dramatically in the past two decades, more people are looking for a healthy alternative to their regular, toxin-filled shampoo. One popular product which consumers are now relying on is a toxin-free shampoo called “Trivani Nourishing Shampoo.” This product is designed according to the company’s well-known Do No Harm Philosophy™, which states that their products contain absolutely no ingredients which may be harmful to the body, (such as DEA) and their products are environmentally-friendly and never tested on animals. The key ingredients in Trivani’s Nourishing Shampoo, like Sodium Lauroyl Oat Amino Acids and Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, safely lift dirt and oil from the hair, allowing it to wash away even while they condition damaged hair follicles. “Going natural” doesn’t mean you don’t have to sacrifice good quality and effective results.
