The evolution of computer technologies today makes possible the expansion of demand for various kinds of computer related services. As we can now see in job openings in company websites, job sites and other portals, many companies are now hiring graduates who specialize in computer programming, animation, and hardware maintenance. To a large extent, universities and colleges across the world-especially I n India, the Philippines and the United States- now offer degrees in these fields.

However, in line with this continuous demand for computer programmers, not all computer graduates can practice full time the skills that they have learned from computer schools. Hence, some may enter other fields, waiting for the proper time to finally work as fulltime computer professionals. Others may opt for a doing freelancing work even while being employed in a separate fulltime job.

Similar to other professions, which may have large numbers of potential recruits but with limited demand, computer programming may be done on a freelance basis. Once first time programmers possess the proper computer hardware, software and Internet connection, what they really need is finding clients, which may be interested to hire their services. First time freelance programmers may browse through the web and click on the various freelance computer programming sites there. Then they may study what services these sites offer, for what type of clients these sites offer their services, what kind of computer programs they specifically design and build and how much will they charge for their services. Some freelancing sites may also offer a competitive bidding process for interested programmers. Once first time programmers have done this and got an idea of how freelance programming is being done, they can now start looking for prospective clients. One is by posting one’s services on the web. Either they can advertise their services in freelance services sites and bid out their services or, in a DIY style- advertise the services through a blog. It is important also that they make personal contacts with prospect clients so that they can really feel your sincerity in offering your services as a freelance programmer. In addition, personally talking with prospect clients enhances the personal relationship between the freelancing programmer and the client. This may help in the future when the client-if satisfied with the programmer’s services-may either get his services again or even refer him to other interested parties.

Freelance programmers must make sure that in their part time “freelancing,” they should maximize their time, resources and skills. Freelance programmers should balance the time they allocate for the project. Hence it is important that before they start doing the project, they are already familiar with all the terms of the work and the expectations of the client. Doing this also helps minimize possible misunderstanding between the client and the freelance programmer. In addition, freelance programmers should make sure that their freelance programming work does not conflict with their fulltime jobs. Either they disclose these with their employers (easier to do if they fulltime jobs are not related to programming), or they do it discreetly.
