Every day hundreds of people blow their hard earned money on penny auctions and then turn around and call them a scam. Most of these people didn't even really read the rules of the auctions before they started bidding. Penny auctions are more professionally known as 'entertainment shopping, and there's a reason it's called that. So, in case you're interested in trying penny auctions and aren't patient enough to read the rules of the actual site you plan on bidding at, here are the basic rules of entertainment shopping in a short easy to digest article.

When you join a penny auction and load up money onto your account, the first thing you're going to be paying for is bids. The price of a bid varies from site to site. Swoopo charges $0.60 per bid. Some entertainment shopping sites charge more, some charge less.

Despite the fact that these types of auctions are known as penny auctions, it should be obvious as this point that you're going to pay more than a few pennies no matter which way you go. I haven't come across a site yet where you could just buy a single bid, though many sites initially give a few bids away for free to help you get over the learning curve. Most bid packs start at $5 or $10.

Once you have bought your bids(or received some free ones), it's time to start bidding. Each bid, that you paid $0.60 for(using Swoopo as an example) will raise the price of the item by $0.01. The auction ends when no one else bids on the item and the timer runs out.

Many people think that when the auction timer runs out, whoever is the last bidder wins and doesn't have to pay anything additional. This is unfortunately only half true. The winner of the auction is the one with the last bid, but they must not pay the final ending auction price, plus any applicable shipping and handling, on top of the cost of the bids that they already placed.

And that's how it really works. Now that you know the truth about penny auctions, you can use your own due diligence as to whether you want to participate in entertainment shopping or not. It's a lot like gambling. If you know how to hold them and when to fold them then you can end up with some great stuff at a cheap price. However, if you enter into it without a strategy then one of my favorite sayings applies, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail and you can kiss your money goodbye and walk away empty handed. Not much fun at all.
