Maintaining and growing the network is not an easy task. Exchanging business card printing and attending networking events may increase the number of your contacts but this does not guarantee that those contacts will benefit you in the future. If you will not benefit from your network, there is no point in even building or maintaining one. Your network is a great resource that you should tap into when the going gets tough. The challenge then is how you can build and maintain a good network that can ultimately benefit you.

Well for starters, you must realize that networks are two way streets. It is not just about you. In other words, the relationship should be beneficial to both parties. By making the relationship a symbiotic one, you are assured that it is going to be a long lasting relationship.

In building your network, it is vital to reach out to a diverse pool of people. Some people limit their contacts to people working in the same field. They think that those outside the circle might not be able to offer any help anyway. Wrong. It is better to establish network with people from different fields, different socio-economic background and even different countries. These contacts can offer a wide array of solutions that may help you, one way or the other.

• Be tech savvy – Social networking sites are a good way to maintain the network. Twitter or Facebook for instance allows you to share useful information. Email groups allow you to 'follow-up' on contacts. I know of contacts in my network who send relevant articles, photo, anecdote or marketing tip. These casual emails keep the group alive.
• Be available – Try to available to contacts even if your schedule does not permit it. There will always be time to spare. Do not be perceived as someone who is always unavailable.

Don’t's:
• Focus on getting the marrow out of your contacts – if your motto is to suck everyone dry then you will realize that you are alone. Remember that networks need to feed on lasting and mutually beneficial relationship.
• Hide behind your computer – While social networking sites or emails are good way to maintain the network, it is also important that you attend gatherings. There is nothing more engaging than a human face.
