In this article we have a look at tips that every web developer should keep in mind when designing websites, in order to optimize the websites for search engines and achieve high search engine rankings.

Page Titles: Every webpage has a "name", known as a page title. The title of each webpage should be included in the title tag as well as at the top of every page. Make sure that the title is between 7 and 10 words, keyword rich and descriptive. It is also important that your page title is relevant to the content of your page and the rest of the website. Do not try to fool the search engines by using keywords that are not relevant to your website. This will do more harm than good!

META Tags: There are two types of META tags - the description META tag and the keyword META tag. The keyword META tag is not important for search engine optimization, but search engines still use description META tags on the search engine results pages. The website results will be displayed as the website title, followed by the description META tag, therefore it is recommended that you use a keyword rich description. Keep the description short and relevant to your website.

Static URL's: There are two types of website URL's: Static and dynamic. Static URL's are URL's that are not dynamically generated and will be relevant to your website page. If for example, you are a company offering search engine optimization services, the page URL should be something like http://www.mycompany.co.za/services/search-engine-optimization.html whereas a dynamic URL will display http://www.mycompany.co.za/index.php?com_content=2&view=3&id=4&page=10. As you can see, the first option is not only search engine friendly, but also human friendly!

Navigation on Every Page: Consistent navigation should be present on every page of your website. This navigation should link to all major sections of your website and it is recommended that every page of your website links back to your home page.

Site Map: A site map is basically a "map of your site", giving the visitor a quick overview of what is where on your website. The site map must link to all the main and sub-sections of your website. It is recommended that your site map should be linked to from every page. Also make sure that your site map is named "sitemap".

These 5 steps form the foundation of a website optimized for search engines. Do not try to re-invent the wheel. Stick to the basics of web design - keep the design simple and the site easy to navigate. Once the site is complete, it is also important to keep the site current. Add new and interesting articles as often as possible. Not only will your website be seen as an active site by search engines (and give them reasons to return to your site often!) but it will also give internet users a reason to visit your website regularly.

Search engine optimization is not a "nice-to-do" exercise anymore, it is vitally important if you want your website to perform well on search engines.
