Printer Quits on You So Where Do You Turn?

Most of us have a printer connected to our computer and most likely use it daily. Printing out instruction for your job, saving recipes or jokes, writing letters, or even printing out the bank statement are all chores we ask of our printer. It’s a workhorse that seldom complains, only needing paper and a full ink cartridge now and then.

But when it does fail us for one reason or another, we want it fixed fast and as cheaply as possible. The price of some printers today makes it a viable option to just replace it with a new one. But if that printer is one you particularly like and want to keep a while longer, you will want to have it repaired.

Many of the problems encountered with printers will require a qualified service technician to fix for you. However there are some steps you can take when it quits. First you need to know if it is a laser printer or an ink jet printer. Check in the owner manual to determine the answer to this question first of all.

There should be a trouble shooting guide that can give you an idea of what a problem may be.

Using an example here, let’s take a bubble jet or ink jet printer apart:
You must definitely make sure the cord is disconnected before doing anything else. There are electrical connections inside to be avoided.
Basic tools will apply here, especially a flat and a Phillips head screwdriver.
Remove the paper trays from front and rear of the printer.
If there is one, remove the plastic cover surrounding any printer cable plugs.

With the flat head screwdriver, gently release a small spring clip that should be holding the cover in its place. Do not put undue pressure on it or you may break something.
There will be indicator arrows which are molded in the plastic to point out clips to be removed. Those will be seen as you delve further into the printer.

Remove that plastic cover and then set it aside for now.
After removing that printer case top you will find more clips and these may be numbered in the order in which they should be removed. Follow the order now and when you put it back together later.

Slowly remove the top of the case, taking care not to force it too much.

Once the covers are completely removed you will see the mechanism and can lift it gently out of the printer. Do have plenty of newspaper spread out to catch any ink that might spill or be on the parts as you remove them from the printer.

You should now clean the mechanism and replace it, then do the above process in reverse to put it back together. Then if the printer still does not function, ask for help at the brand site. You may wish to send it off to them for repairs or find a local repair store for your particular brand.

If your printer is a laser it would be advisable to check with the brand site for useful information and repair.
