A lot of people assume that the term motorized bicycle refers to a scooter, moped, or any small motorcycle. This is quite erroneous though. The term motorized bicycle is now used to refer to a standard bicycle that has had motor attached to aid with the cycling. The bicycles can be used with the motor running or without it.

Some of the engines used in modern variants, are internal combustion engines (burning fuel like petrol), hence the confusion with moped and scooters. Another source for the confusion is that motorized bicycles are not very common in Europe and the United States. However, in a lot of the more populous cities in a lot of Asian countries, these bicycles are quite common.

Types Of Motors Used

As mentioned above, some bikes use an internal combustion engine, which requires fuel in order to operate. With the electric motors, these are actually batteries that can be recharged and as technology gets better, the batteries are enjoying longer life. Lithium ion batteries are growing in popularity, as are alternative recharging sources like solar power.

With the motorized bicycle, you have to choose between a bike whose motor is regulated by the pedalling motion or a bike in which the motor kicked through the use of a throttle installed in the handlebars. The pedal-based motor sometimes will have a crank sensor to detect your pedalling or a torque sensor that measures the rotational force of the pedalling action.

How To Choose Your Motorized Bicycle.

There are a few things to consider when deciding on the best motorized bicycle for your needs. One of these is the distances you intend to be travelling on your bike. Another key consideration is the terrain you will be travelling on. Some bicycles are optimised to cover longer distances on flat terrain. Others are more suited for providing power boosts in hilly or mountainous regions. You will need to investigate these options, as well as the advertised fuel tank sizes, or battery capacity.

Considering a motorized bicycle does not mean getting rid of your current bike. It is possible to buy a kit to add an engine to your standard bicycle, and so convert it into a motorized one. Such kits do come in different makes, types, and at different prices. You should be able to buy conversion kits for both internal combustion and electric motors for you bike. They will typically cost you a few hundred dollars, and are designed to allow anyone that had done basic bicycle maintenance to do the conversion themselves. Check with your local bicycle store for advice on this. A lot of the can also do the conversion for you too.

So, what are you waiting for? In cities where congestion makes it difficult to get around in a car, a motorized bicycle strikes a great balance, between the convenience of motorized transport, and the ease of travelling by bicycle. As they generally have small, low consumption motors, or electric power, these bikes will be cheaper to operate, and be better for the environment, than a car or standard motorcycle.
