So what is going to happen on December 21st 2012 ? According to modern day understanding of the Mayan Calendar, the world is going to finish on that date since the Mayan Calendar finishes at that stage.

Lets have a basic glimpse at the calendar and have a go and make out what all the upheaval is about. It appears that Mayan thoughts about time keeping and calendars were very cyclical, not unlike our own contemporary day calendar structure but unquestionably more involved. Our one operates on days, months, years, etc. (yearly cycle of sun) while the Mayan one is based on cycles of the Sun and Venus. Their calendar is based on two cycles, the 365 day calendar watching the Sun and a 260 day calendar watching Venus. Mutually, they make up a 52 year cycle. They also have longer cycles of 400 years, and they designed their calendar of thirteen, 400-year-cycles to run out when the sun will also be on the "galactic equator"; that is, the centre-line of the galaxy. Put in to the mix that the Mayans did not count to the base 10 like we do but customarily to the base 20.

So to summarize at this point, each day in a 52 year cycle had its own exclusive name from a combination of cycles and to keep track of dates on a longer time scale than 52 years, they had what is known as the Long Count. Thus, the existing Mayan Calendar which started on August 11th 3114, will run its complete Long Cycle to end up on December 21st 2012. The Mayan calendar was designed to be cyclical, so the fact that the long count comes to an end in Dec 21st, 2012 while having some meaning to the Mayan Civilisation as the finish of a great cycle, it does not purport that the "humanity will come to an end". It's in point of fact true that there are Mayan names for periods of time longer than 13 bactuns (one Long Cycle), so in actuality, their calendar doesn't even end at that point. Still if it did there is no indication to hint that they (or anyone for that matter) had particular knowledge about the end of the world.

So where does that leave us ? According to scientists and technologists something perplexing is occurring to the Earth behind the scenes. The earthly and solar polar U-turn peaks are imminent inside three weeks either side of that date, December 21, 2012. The tectonic plate shifts, underwater volcanoes, and earthquakes are increasing at rates never seen previously. The solar flares are growing. The earth’s magnetosphere and ionosphere are experiencing odd disturbances. The weather patterns are displaying greatly increased boundaries with the numbers and strength of typhoons, hurricanes and cyclones on the rise. Add to that the number of floods and droughts has increased beyond imaginations in the preceding ten years. We are definitely in a cycle of disorder but whether this is the forerunner to the finish of the world is a subject of intense supposition.

One can only maintain an open mind, staying alert and sensitive to what is occurring around one’s self. Above all, the important thing is to rely on your own thought processes to guide you through the information, signs, etc and not rely on the media and commercial interests to alarm you into believing the worst.
