MDX stands for Multidimensional Expressions serve the purpose of helping the OLAP databases working as a query

language. It is much similar to SQL which is known as a query language for relational databases. This language works for different calculation purposes with the help

of syntax that is similar to spreadsheet formulas.

OLAP cubes store the multidimensional data that is queried and manipulated by a specialized syntax provided by the MultiDimensional eXpressions (MDX) language.

Although some of these can be translated into traditional SQl, the requirement of the
Synthesis of clumsy SQL expressions is invaluable for all MDX expressions whether it is very simple or the difficult one. MDX is incorporated with a number of

stunning features that can be helpful for various IT organizations. These days, most of the OLAP vendors prefer to use the MDX. The popularity of this query language

has made it a perfect and standard alternative for OLAP systems.

Microsoft was the first which took an initiative to introduce the MDX as part of the OLE DB for OLAP specification in 1997. As far as the invention of this

language is concerned, it could be possible when the group of SQL Server engineers along with Mosha Pasumansky decided to do the task in a positive manner.

MDX include six major data types. These types can be defined in the following way:

Scalar: Scalar can be defined in the form of a string or a number. As far as the specification of this data type is concerned, the task could be done in the way, for

example, number 5 or string “OLAP.” MDX function can return it, e.g. UniqueName (sting), Aggregate (number), Value (number or string) etc.

Dimension/Hierarchy: It is very easy to explain the dimension. It is, actually, a dimension of a cube. As a whole, it works as a main organizer of attribute and

measure information in a cube.

Level: The level that is noticed in the Dimension hierarchy is referred to as the level, which is a data type of query language. The unique name, e.g. [Month],

[Fiscal], [Time] is the source of specifying it.

Member, tuple and set are three other primary data type of MDX.
