What I wish to accomplish here is to strip away all the rubbish, misconceptions and nonsense that is out there so that you could develop a reasonable methodology for promoting your site.

For starters, precisely what puts a web page at the top of the rankings?

The reality is that all search engines like google use their own, top secret, algorithms to position web sites. Their goal is to deliver relevant, precise, and up-to-date information to their searching public. To do this, they are in a continual battle against Search engine optimization experts who would seek to skew those rankings in order to put their clientele at the very top.

There are two "approaches" for getting top rankings: so-called "Black Hat" and "White Hat". White Hat refers to approaches that actually work with the search engines - to provide high quality, relevant, exact, timely information. Black Hat refers to strategies that try to get around that by various ways of cheating. Black Hat techniques can work. but usually only for a brief period of time until eventually all the PhD’s at Google determine what you really are doing and find a way to plug that loophole - and suspend you while they are at it.

No one understands for certain what ranking factors work, but these are the ones which have been well proven, have survived the test of time, and make intuitive sense, provided the aim of the major search engines themselves:

•Quality crafted content material, and lots of it. This goes beyond just stuffing in your search phrases as much as possible. The SE’s are getting far better at identifying themes by way of "latent semantic indexing", which essentially means employing artificial intelligence to work out what the site is about, instead of just what key phrases are in it. •New sites are also worthy - keep in mind, the SE’s wish to provide hot news, so they will give an initial priority to new web sites, and to new links pointing to web sites, as they may reveal that there's some hot, recent, news on that website.

•Links OUT to authority sites are also worth points. But don’t have too many. While you are not penalized for any bad links coming in, you could end up penalized if you link out to bad neighborhoods.

•The keywords themselves - obviously some key phrases are much more competitive than others. Aim to get ranked for your most specific search phrases first. If you are a local business, then tag on the name of your town or state to the keyword.

•Unique content. The final factor that search engines like google want to do is to deliver to the public 40,000 pages that all say the same thing! Duplicate content is immediately acknowledged and filtered out by the SE’s. Do not merely slap up the same articles or blog posts that everyone else is using. You will want unique content. That does apply both for your own site, and also to the websites which are linking to you.

The Myths

•An Search engine marketing expert can guarantee you a top position in the search engines. Rubbish! Certainly he cannot. He does not own the SE, so he or she cannot control them, so he or she cannot guarantee any particular result. All they can guarantee is the actions he will take to try and get you there. And in many cases if he could guarantee you a top position, it might be WAY outside of your price range (whatever it might be)!

•An Web optimization specialist will get you 100 PR5, 6, 7, or 8 links for $100. In your dreams. A single link on a PR5 page could possibly cost you $50 per month. The higher the PR, the more costly. There are, in fact, only six methods for getting links on high-PR pages:

•Buy them (very expensive - you'll pay around $20 each year per link for PR2 links! - on 100 links that is $2,000 per year!)

•Talk them into putting a link on their website for free (!).

•Get them to enroll in your affiliate program.

•Provide them with unique content that they Would like to place on their sites.

•Put them on low PR web pages and wait for the PR to increase.

•Have a really awesome site that people voluntarily put links up and tell other people about you.

•You cane easily see how many links that point to your page by using the link: command in Google or Yahoo. This command is broken and does not produce any meaningful results. To test that go to Google and type in link:myweddingfavors.com -

you're going to get 812 results (as of writing this - it might change.). However visit Yahoo and do the same thing. You will get about 253 results. Nevertheless, do a search for "myweddingfavors.com" (in any of the SE’s) and you will see the number of pages really are linking to them! The simple truth is, the SE’s don’t want you to know how many links you have. Why not? Because it encourages you to cheat! The only real individual who could care the number of backlinks there are, is an individual who is trying to do SEO - and the SE’s are at battle with SEO.

Nevertheless - here is a Google Hack that reveals the actual story: type in to your browser the following search phrase, substituting yourdomain name details obviously (Note how the first one does not include the dot com at the end).

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=.yourdomain. - www.yourdomain.com

So - no-one can guarantee that the links these people create will either be indexed at all or, if they are, will appear in that link: command.
