How to Create Converting Sales Pages

No one likes a flashing, jumping darkly-colored hard-to-read web page. Most visitors will leave rather than read closely to make sense of the confusion.
Follow these ten tips to keep your web pages good-looking and clean, while simultaneously garnering larger sales rates:
1. Break it up to make it easy to skim. That is, have enough sub-headings in larger print, with bolding, colored text and underlining to lead your readers to keep reading. Most visitors will do a quick scan of the page before deciding to read in depth or leave your site. Make sure their eyes move smoothly and easily down the page, slowing for the important points accentuated in the headings.
2. Have good navigational links that are consistent, simple and obvious so users can move easily from page to page. Don't make it too complex. Simple text links displayed vertically near the top of either side or horizontally at the top (and optionally at the bottom, too) work well. Other good navigational systems display buttons or tabs to click.
3. Make sure the appearance matches your content, including any ads. For example, if your page concentrates on how to recover from a traumatic event in your life, you don't want a lot of happy colors, moving ads and loud music. Turn down the volume, both visually and audibly, and keep it professional. On the other hand, if your website reviews cruises, a bit more movement and color to enhance the playful mood would be expected.
4. Sales pages are different in that there should be no ads other than your own primary message on it. In fact, leave off your usual site navigation links the non-sales pages have. The only link you should provide that takes your reader away from your sales page should be to your order page. Don't take it too far though, and block the browser back button. This will only anger your users.
5. Use a common font, like Times New Roman or Arial. Size should usually be 12 point. Using a more site-specific font may look great on your machine, but if your reader's browser doesn't recognize that font, it won't look the same on his screen.
6. If you want to use your signature on your site, create an image file from a scanned copy to display there instead of using a script font. These fonts aren't always part of everyone's web browsers.
7. Don't let the background color compete with your foreground. A solid white background is generally preferable, as it's easy on the eyes. A dark background with a loud flashy font is exhausting to read and should never be used.
8. Any time you try a new design, assure it's readable through different screen resolutions, and especially different browsers. An online service can assist you with this. Search for Browser Shots to see how your website appears in a lot of different browsers.
9. If the primary content of a web page is an article or other good content, make sure it's printable. If a screen print would catch a lot of unnecessary advertising, create a link to a printable version - free of ads and color.
10. Break up your long paragraphs into shorter ones with lots of subtitles outlining your primary benefits or points and making good use of white space. This allows your readers to skim for the points that interest them most. Long, boring paragraphs will have them clicking away from your page before they get through the first sentence!
Keep your mind on these tips as you're building each page, and look it over when you've finished your first draft using your best critical review skills. There are always exceptions, just like every rule. But violating a lot of them will turn away visitors rather than make them click your order button.
