Birds are truly amazing creatures. Although their intelligence varies from type to type, they have great reasoning ability. Scientists found that young chicks could easily learn the difference between triangles, circles and squares faster than laboratory rats. This intelligence needs to be stimulated in birds kept in cages to maintain their mental, physical and emotional health.

Basically, a bird has five specific needs. They are food and water, company, chewing, exercise and grooming. Many bird toys are designed with these five needs in mind. We’ll briefly explore each one.

Bird Toys and Food: Nature designed all animals to hunt for their food. Birds are the same way. They like the stimulation of ‘finding’. A bird toys with hidden food hidden inside is a great way to provide fun and still activate his basic need to ‘hunt’. These treat dispensing bird toys provide hours of mental stimulation and occupy the bird’s time as he plays with his bird toy.

Pet Bird Toys and Company: Birds are social creatures and need interaction. Bird toys come in different types to relieve the need for companionship. Some birds like one kind, others another. It will depend on the bird himself. Bird toys with mirrors are great! The bird sees himself in the reflection and thinks he is seeing another bird. Bird toys that have interactive parts fill the bird’s time with things that respond to him. This also creates a sense of social contact. These Pet toys are identifiable with their bells, doors, or buttons.

Garden Bird Feeders: Some birds, particularly parrots have a need to shred and chew. It is good to have tough ropes and wood for these types of birds. Give parrots only bird toys designed for tough parrot beaks.

Some Garden Bird Feeders use bird chew toys to keep their beaks sharp. Choose a chew toy that is appropriate to the size and strength of the bird’s beak. Bird chew toys also come in brightly colored hanging shapes which also stimulate his intelligence.

Pet Bird Toys and Exercise: It is important that birds exercise. While the best exercise is flying outside the cage, it is not always possible or practical to do so. Bird toys that allow the bird to climb, perch or swing are good exercise. Rope ladders are fun and a bird can enjoy climbing them. Bird toys that have a bell in them which they ‘chase’ around the cage will stimulate them and give them exercise. Rubber balls suspended from the top of the cage will give them a challenge as they climb up the cage to get them.

Bird toys and Grooming: To keep your bird from plucking his feathers out of boredom, buy a bird toy that he can ‘groom’. These bird toys are designed to come apart as he pulls and plucks at it and thus fulfilling his grooming needs. This keeps his feathers where they need to be - on his body!

Lastly, make sure the bird toys are bird appropriate. A small bird will enjoy small bird toys. If they are too big, they may scare him or not interest him. A large bird may not be interested in small toys. Tough birds, like parrots, need tough toys which can be torn and shredded without hurting himself.

If the bird loves his bird toys and wears them out, you have found his style! You’ve given him the social, physical and mental stimulation he craves! Continuing to supply him with the bird toys that address his basic needs will keep him physically and mentally healthy.
